A federal fact-finding board, in
a 2 to 1 decision, recommended
today that the 18 Vi cents an hour
railroad wage increase be paid to
Pullman conductors on the basis
of a 240-hpur month even though
their actual working month is
225 hours.
The dissenting member. Chief
Justice Robert G. Simmons of the
Nebraska supreme court, protest
ed that the decisions "unlocks the
doors and furnishes a vehicle to
be used in further tearing down
anti-inflation controls."
The majority, I. L. Sharfman,
chairman, and Walton H. Hamil
ton, held that traveling railroad
employes are in a different situa
tion than workers with a fixed
place of employment who "may
come to work and leave the job
at fixed times" and that a differ
ent .standard should be used in
calculating their work-month.
The derision, granting a month
ly increase of $44.40, was hailed
by officials of the Order of Rail
way Conductors of America.

Schaack, president of the Chicago
board of trade, today termed
"scurrilous and perhaps libelous"
statements made by UNRRA Di
rector Fiorello H. LaGuardia con
cerning trading on grain ex
changes. i
Speaking yesterday before the
United Nations food and agricul
tural organization at Copenha
gen, Denmark, LaGuardia called
for elimination of grain price fluc
tuations. This, he said, "will put
every gambling grain exchange
out of business in Chicago, in
Winnipeg,- in Liverpool, or where
ever it exists."
Schaack said in a statement, I
hope that the reaction of those
whom LaGuardia tarred with his
appellation Of 'gamblers' will be
such as to bring about a curb on
any further utterances of similar
character.!

Brown Rot in
Prune Crop
Appearance of brown rot in
some Marion county- prune or
chards should serve as a warning
to all prune growers to lake im
mediate action against spread of
this common disease, says D. L.
Ramussen, assistant county
agent. Inspection of several or
chards by Rasmussen on Friday
revealed that slight to moderate
infection has already taken place
and has become very apparent
following the rainy weather dur
ing the past few days.
Rotting and spore - covered
prunes have fallen to the ground
and rotted, mummified prunes are
apparent on the trees. Other fruits
have- soft, watery tissue, but the
whitish to grayish spore tufts have
not appeared.
Problem Not Easy
Preventing spread of brown rot
is not easy, but a combination of
dusting and use of sanitary prac
tices will give partial control.
Growers who have not dusted
si'tVce the rains should apply a
finely divided dusting sulfur at
the rate of about 40 to 50 pounds
per acre. Sanitary practices must

Dust With Sulfur
All picking boxes and lugs
should be dusted with -sulfur be
fore using. Growers should, re
move all cull fruit' from under
the trees before the shakers begin
work. Pickers should be ijisl rutt
ed to throw out spore covered and
decoyed or mummified prunes.
Since any break in the skin of
the fruit enables brown rot to
gain a foothold more ea.sily, pick
ers should be cautioned to handle
the fruit carefully to avoid stem
puncturesbruises, and skin-abrasions.
Prunes should be processed
as quickly as possible, for the
brown rot organism spreads rap
idly while the prunes are in the
box.
