With the summer season in full swing visitors are arriving in the
capital daily as guests of friends and relatives.
Professor and Mrs. Maurice Brennen are entertaining as their house
guests her parei;t. Mr. and Mrs. John Valek of Chicago and brother-in-li.w
and sirter. Mr. and Mrs. Earl Gerfen (Joyce Valek). also of Chicago.
The Valeks plan to live here and have rented a house until they are able
to build They are now waiting for their furniture to arrive.
Mr Gerfen was recently released from the navy ns a lieutenant and
he is taking some rneciol work at Wi'lamette university during the sum
mer ses.'ion Mr GertVn hfis visited here before with the Brennens. The
ht; ar d guest have Ut-n vacationing at Nclscott and Jater plan a trip
U the mountains.
Arrive From ebraska
Arriving in the rapit; 1 Tuesday for a week's visit at the home of Dr.
ar.d Mrs Ralph K Joseph will be his mother, Mrs. T. V. Joseph and his
iter-. Miss Marion and Miss Helen Joseph of Omaha. The travelers
have been in San Francisco visiting Dr. Joseph's brother who is in the
navy
Miss Constance, Thompson of San Francisco is coming Monday for
several davs' visit at the home of her nephew and niece, Mr. and Mrs.
William H. Hammond.
Miss Sally McClelland arrived in Salem bv plane Saturday frosh San
Francisco for a fortnight's stay at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs.
James McClelland. Miss McClelland has been in the bay city the past
year and is employed in the office at the Emporium. Two other young
girls r.ow living in San Francisco and exDected home the first of August
re Miss Emma Lou East, daughter of the W. H. Easts, and Miss Carol
Young, daughter of the Hubbell Youngs.
Here From California
Mrs. Jerrold Ow'en of Oakland. Calif., is arriving in the capital this
weekend to be the bmiseguest of Mrs. Jasper Newton Bishop. Mr. and
Mrs. Owen came north last week and she went on to Seattle to visit her
sister while he attended the American Legion convention in Portland.
Mr Owen returned to Oakland by plane Saturday and his wife will drive
south in a week She will be accompanied by Mrs. Howard Dickson, who
came north with them last week.
Mr and Mrs. L. S. Barnes of Beverly Hills, are driving north on
Moc.day to be the house guests of Mrs. George Waters.
Miss Barbara Bentley of Tule Lake. Calif., bride-elect of Erwin C.
Bahlburg. is coming tJay for a week's visit at the home of her fiance's
parents, Mr. arid Mrs. Carl Bahlburg. ';

Much feted isitors in the capital have been Mr. and Mrs. William
McAfee and son. Ward of San Leandro, Calif., who are house guests of
Dr and Mrs Charles D. Wood. '
Today Mr. and Mrs. Conrad Paulson will be hosts for a buffet
supper at their Court street home in honor of the McAfees.. The 'supper
will follow a round of golf at the Salem Golf club. " i " . : '

Thursday afternoon Mrs. Paulson and Mrs. John R. Wood entertained
a group of the younger set at an all day picnic at Paradise Island for
Ward McAfee. Making up the party were Ward. Tommy Steeves Allan,
Mary and Robert Wood, children of the John Woods, John, Chris and
Ricky Wood, children of the Charles Woods.
Mrs. John Bagley and son, John Reid,
who arrived last week from St. Louis, Mo.,
to be the guests of her mother, Mrs. Oora
Reid, will be honored at a salad luncheon on
Tuesday afternoon when Mrs. James McFar
land and Mrs. Ralph E&gstaff entertain at
the former's home on North 19th street. Six
teen of Mrs. Bagleys friends have been in
vited. The afteoioon hours will be spent in-,
formally.
Mrs. Bagley and her son expect to be
here a month or so until they receive orders
to leave for Panama to join Major Bagley,
who left Inst week. The Bagleys formerly
resided hern.

To Attend Celebration
Miss Beryl Holt. Mr. and Mrs. James B. Ycning and
Mr. and Mrs. Waldo O. Mills, sr. will motor to Taft today
for the silver wedding anniversary and celebration of
Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Winters. The affair will be held at
the Winters' summer home at Devils Lake.
Mrs. James Bennison is leaving today for Fort Lew
is to meet Lt. Bennison. who has just arrived in the
states from the European theatre of operations. He will
receive his release at Fort Levis. after which the couple
will vacation in Seattle and other northern point be
fore returning to Salem.
