86, Succumbs

)-Mn. Josephine Melchior, a
native . of Wisconsin and a local
resident for 'the last six years,
died at the age of 86 Friday night
, in a Portland hospital. Widow of
the late Mike Melchior, she had
iimm in Pnrflanrf with him In
,1893 and subsequently lived 40
e' years in Tillamook.
- Last rites will be conducted at
St. Mary's church at 10 a.m.
.Tuesday. Burial will be in Cal

eral home in charge.
Survivors include a daughter,
'Mrs. Veronica Nitch of Portland;
t three sons, the Rev. Hildebrand
Melchior. Woodburn; Mike Mel

Kate Cephart, both of Lakeville,
Minn.

Plans Delayed
WOODBURN, April v20 -(Special)-
Plans for construction of
the swimming pool will go ahead
this year even though construc
tion will not be ready for use
this season. This was the deci
sion of the city council Tuesday
night.
Bids will be received as soon
as a site has been selected. Archi
tect L. P. Bartholomew of Sa
lem said it would take four
months for Construction. It is
considered undesirable to select
the site at the primary election.
In response to petition of
property owners, the council in
structed the city engineer to
draw up plans and specifications
for paving of Oak, South First,
Gath and Brown streets.
Mayor H. P. Austin announc
ed the budget committee would
be appointed May 7 and will
meet May 15.

Puring the month of Marcjb, ac
cording to the report pf Mrs. Ruth
Cotter, Linn county public health
administrator, 1160 persons in
Linn county received aid through
the commission, and $31,312.53
was distributed. The report.ihow
ed that this amount was an in
crease of $628.39 over February
relief.
During March a total of $8197.53
was paid to 341 persons, Compris
ing 164 cases in general assistance,
$1421.05 being for medical care

totaled $19,918 and was distribut
ed among 570 persons over 65
years of age, who were in want;
and $4524 to 58 families: includ-I
ing 175 children in the form of
aid to dependent children. '
The 16 blind persons in the
county received a total of $673.
Average grant person was general
assistance $37.79; old age assist
ance $34.98; dependent children
$78; and blind $42.08.

Basketball was played after the

Chance Meeting
On Ship Leads
To Stage Here
They met quite by chance
aboard a troopship headed for
Okinawa just about a year ago.
They met again in a Portland
theatrical agency last week, and
they will meet every . night this
week at Leonard's Supper club.
"They" are Ted Taylor, the
widely known new ventriloquist,
and "Tony" Karloff, the stage
and radio actor and studio stand
in for the movies' Boris Karloff.
It was aboard the APA Col
bert in May of 194S when PFC
Taylor and Cpl. Karloff were on
their way to Okinawa beach
heads that by queer twists of
fate one asked the other for a
match. They were delighted to
discover that both were ex-performers.
A friendship developed
and they vowed that some day
when peace earned again they
would see their names together
on the same playbill. That time
now is here.
They both leave for Hollywood
and pictures after their engage
ment at the club this week.
The largest fisherman among
animals is the monstrous Alaskan
brown or Kodiak bear. He some
times reaches a weight of 1500
pounds.
After a short running start a
lion can leap as far as 25 feet, but
he can hardly jump half that far
without the preliminary run.

"Borrow" Salem Car
SILVERTON, April 20 -(Special)-
Through the efforts of
Constable E. W. O'Brian, W. G.
Simpson again has his automobile
in his own possession. A 12-year-old
boy "borrowed" the car from
a Salem street. Sunday night,
brought it to Silverton and pick
ed up two 13-year-old boys. The
trio went out on a dinner party,
later spending the night in the
car. Officer O'Brian piclted up
the car at 6:45 a.m.
