In Coast Loop Flag Derby
SAN JOSE, March 20.-(Special)-If it's pitching and hitting that's
needed by the club which is to win the 1846 pennant in the Pacific
Coast baseball league, give Portland's defending champion Beavers
a place at least somewhere near the top. The Beavers have the pitchers
and the potential swatsmiths here
In gobs.
Manager Marv Owen, all ready
to start his third season as skip
per of the Portlands, has no less
than eight starting pitchers in
camp, and all battling for one of
the four or five available starting
berths. Two 20-game winners in
1945 are included in the nine
Roy Helser and Don Pulford. Ad
Liska. another 20-gamer. is a hold
cut. But pitching prospects, for the
flub being what they are, nobody
seems to care whether Liska. joins
the club or not.
The other moundsmen includes
Sid Cohen, who won 14 last sum
mer; Jack Tising and Jake Mooty,
who captured 11 gmes each, Tis
ing as a reliefer mostly and Mooty
as the firehalling righthander who
got off to a bad start but' wound
up as probably the most effective
server on the club; newcomers Joe
Orrtll and Dick (Kewpie) Bar
rett, both of whom were in the
majors last year, and holdover
Carl Gunnarson, who will likely
wind' up with the Beaver farm
ub at Salem. Barrett was one of
the top winners in the Coast league
ear after year when he was with
he Seattle Rainiers a few seasons
"ack.
The hitting department is led
hy returnees Larry Barton, Owen
himself and Frank Shone, who all
batted over .300 last season. Bar

and Shone .304. Herman Reich,
prewar slugger. Is back from the
army and going strong. He will
likely play in the outfield where
Shone, Ted Gullic, Mayo Smith.
Danny Escobar and Danny Amaral
are battling for positions.
Catching chores will be ably,
handled by Billy Holm, purchased
rora the Boston Red Sox, Roy

infield is well fixed for capable

Hoag Handed Verdict Over Cook; Ford Winner;
Sandy, Canby Share State Prep Grapple Title
$1200
'House'

Benefit Show
Crowd Split on Main
Event Verdict; Moore
And Towery Winners
By Al Llghtner
Statesman Sports Editor
Duane (The Durable) Hoag,
cock-sure fistic fireball from
Portland, notched his fourth con
secutive win to cap the Jack Von
benefit boxing show at the ar
mory last night, but at least half
the customers who pitched in a
gross house of nearly $1200 went
home: thoroughly convinced -the
Dane with the perpetual motion
ideas is the luckiest little guy pe-
desting Portland's streets today.:
Hoag was given the six-round
decision by Referee Packy Mc
Farland, and if it belonged to him
he really earned it the hard way.
Lanky Archie Cook of Seattle,
with a seven pound weight ad
vantage over the Tex Salkeld dy
namiter, gave same dynamiter all
he wanted In one of the dmg-
dongin'est bar-roomers local clout
clients have seen in years and
years.; Many rmgsiders figured
Hoag, ; who was knocked down
once in the fourth heat, hadn't
won a round. The scrap culmi
nated 'still another of Matchmak
er Harry Plant's rock-'em sock
'cm shows.
Cook, who was wise enough to
stay clear of infighting with the
126-pound buzz saw, didn't mind
at all holding his own in the toe-
to-toe : slugging, Jolting, piling
and general all-around mayhem.
At one "time . in the fierce brawl
the two went hurtling from the
ring ipi a pileup. Many other
times the crowd was certain it
saw low blows scored by both
throttle-to-the- floor scrappers.
Hoag, although considerably bat
tered by Cook over the route, was
in better shape at the gun. Per
haps that Is what won him the
nod.
The knockdown came In the
midst of the wildest round in the
scrap. Cook connected with a pair
of jolting rights, the second of
which dropped the surprised and
wild-swinging Dane to one knee.
He was up n at 'em again, how
ever, before McFarland could
count fnore than "one.
The Bobby Ford-John L. Sul
livan six-rounder that shared the
top billing was Negro Bobby's al
most all the way. This one was
as advertised Slugger Ford
against Boxer Sullivan with the
slugger! taking a popular decLsion
after a rugged brawl. ,
Sullivan bad nothing but respect for
Ford's two-fisted thumping abilities
and stayed clear of the elongated
darkle as often as he. could. The negro
bloodied Sumvan"s noeano cut nis
eye en ; route and In the second heat
he dropped John L. to the deck for two
counts of one each. Ford was the ag
gressorasd harder puncher. He, wa
also one of the most Improved boxers
seen here since his debut eight weeks
ago, too. Ford weighed 177. Sullivan
167.
Dave Arndt. 150. Portland, took a
boxing lesson from more experienced
Kelly Jackson. 148, Portland, in their
four-rounder but came up with a draw.
Arndt wasn't credited with a single
round on a number of score sheets.
Manual James, 160. Portland, the
negro belter of whom they JI have
plenty of respect, in the Northwest,
'tis said, showed why against Old Log
ger Jack Hibbard, 168. Klamath Falls,
in their, go. The well-buiK negro left
hander, fast . and sharp with either
hand, knocked The Tony Galento of
Klamath Falls kicking in 2:10 of the
fourth heat. Hibbard had been clown
ing most of the way, but got that
smacked Out of him."
Bill Towery. ISO. Turner, who was
making his pro debut, made It an
auxpicious one by slamming out s
TKO in 2:00 of the third over Rubin
Ruiz. M2. Portland. Towery started out
shakilv but soon mastered things. His
infighting was good and he put the
Mex down twice before McFarland
stonoed it In. the third.
Leon i Moore. 131, Salem, won his
fourth straight local fight in the open
er bv butuointins Eddie Kree. 128,
Portland. Both were plenty Willing ail
the wav and produced a dinger of a
bout. Moor tried for a kayo all the
way but couldn't set up the game
Eggee properly
Joe Kahut, woodburn's own fistic
great refereed one bout snd joined
most of' the fighters and Referee Mc
Farland in donating services to the
Von fund. The sponsoring Veterans of
Foreign -Wars will give Mrs. Von. wid
ow of the late fighter, the net re

One bout didn't materialize last night
when a; doctor's exam refused to let
one of the fighters go on.
