In the early Roman constitution
the citizens, all of them sold ieri,
were classified according to the
equipment which their means
made possible. Soldiers in early
armies equipped themselves. j
' The word soldier means "paid
man." The first soldiers were mer
cenaries,' bodies of troops attached
to a leader who hired himself and
his force to any power that would
pay them.
