Flight Officer James Eknian
cabled his parents, Mr. and Mrs.
Ernest Ekman, Silverton, Thurs
day, that he is on his way home
on the hospital ship, Thistle. He
will arrive at Camp Haan, Calif.,
Saturday. Ekman was seriously in
jured in a plane crash in the
south Pacific two weeks ago.

GERVAIS, Dec. 13 A passen
ger on the ship carrying the 37th
division of the U. S. army, which
is to dock at San Francisco this
week,' is George Helmig, son of
Mrs.! Kate Helmig of Gervais. His
mother expects him home for the
weekend.

cious things-to-eat. No need to worry
for they keep perfectly. - ! - .

An easy-to-make cake that will store
for a number of weeks if kent in a
,cooi, arypiace. -
2 cups flour " f
Vz tsp. salt
Vz tsp. soda
2 tsps. baking
powder j
1 tsp. cinnamon 4
Vz tsp. nutmeg
Va tsp. cloves
Va tsp. allspice
Vz cup shortening
1 cup brown
s sugar firmly'
packed .
Sift (and measure flour; sift again
with salt and spices. Cream shorten
ing and sugar until light and fluffy:
beat in egg. Add applesauce and
flour mixture alternately; beat until
smooth. Add fruit and nutmeats.
Pour into well-greased loaf pan

(350 F.) for 1 hour or SmtU done.
Makes one loaf cake.

1 cup sugar 1 tsp. cinnamon
1 egg, beaten ; 2 tsps. ginger
1 tsp. soda Vz tsp. salt

in combined soda and molasses. Sift
and measure flour; sift again with
cinnamon, ginger and salt; Blend well

1 hour. Shape dough into small balls
