PFC Corydon Blodgett
Now in Philippines
Dr. and Mrs. C. 1 Blodgett re
ceived thir first uncensored letter
Wednesday from their son, PFC
Corydon Blodgett, who is now at
Mindora, in the Philippines. The
letter was written on September
1. the first day the censorship was
lifted.
; He participated in the Okinawa
campaign with the 96th division
and then was sent to Leyte and
Samar tor a rest period. At Min
dora he Is now taking regular ar
my training. The army man's wife,
the former Lois Phillips, resides
in Portland.

Short Course at Nancy,1

First Class Eric L. Fitzsimmons of
1391 Market street, Salem, Ore
gon, whose wife, Hulda, lives in
Portland. Ore., is : enrolled in an
eight-week's course in French
language sod civilization at the
University of Nancy, France.
- The University of Nancy, first
founded in 1572 at Pout-a-Mbus
son, offered its facilities to the
army's information and education
program, and the current summer
course is the first given at the
university since 1939.-
Classes in French language and
civilization are taught by English
speaking French instructors for
three hours in the morning. Visits
to museums, art galleries, and oth
er places of interest in Nancy and
the neighboring area occupy the
afternoons. ' .
Fitzsimmons has been overseas
since last May. He joined the ar
my in September, 1940. He attend
ed Willamette university, where
he was a student at the time he
entered the service. .

DIVISION OF THE SEVENTH
ARMY 533 . members ot the
159th infantry regiment of Maj.
Gen. Donald A. Stroh's 106th Lion
division have won bronze service
stars for participation in major
campaigns in both the Pacific and
the European theatres of war.
In the group are PFC George
C. Venable, 1027 W. 12th st, Al
bany; First Lt Harold Nearing,
Corvallis;' S. Sgt. G. A. Johnson,
Gervais and PFC Harold F. Peter
son, route 3, Salem. - ,
In the northern France cam
paign the 159th- was among the
units which held a ring of steel
around the German forces in the
French ports of Lorient and St
Nazaire. The , regiment sped to
the Rhineland about a month be
fore V-E day, and helped to corral
hand hold tremendous' numbers of
prisoners of war in - the Sinzig
Andernach area near the famous
Remager bridge. -
The regiment is now stationed
near Karlsruhe, in the American
occupied zone of the southern
Rhineland. A "

son, who has been at Camp Rob
erts for basic training,, reported
last week to Ft Lewis, and ex
pects to be sent to the Pacific
soon in the army of occupation.
He is a son-in-law of Mr. - and
Mrs. J. E. Hamer. His wife Lila
and two young sons live here.
