PORTLAND, Aug. SMP)-Work-ers
at the Libby, McNeill & Libby
cannery threatened today to re
new their month-long strike, win
ning, 130 to 110, a strike vote held
under auspices of the NLRB.
ClO-afiiliated (employes at the
plant, charged the company , dis
criminated against strikers who
returned to work, although a war
labor board directive had ordered
no discrimination. The union said
25 women with seven to 15 years'
seniority were told by company
officials they could return only
by working as new employes on
the night shift.
CIO officials j said the strike,
which ended yesterday, may be
renewed at once unless discrimi
nation is stopped.

giene chemist was announced this
week by Dr. Harold M. Erickson,
state health officer, is a graduate
of Salem public schools.
Moser took his master's degree
at Oregon State college and his
doctor's degree in chemistry at

Truman Calls
For Speedy
Ban Removals
WASHINGTON, Aug. 9 -(ff)-President
Truman today called for
removal of wartime production
controls as soon as possible to
speed development of a healthy
national peacetime economy.
He made it clear at "the same
time, however, that the time has
not yet come when American bus
iness can be freed of all restric
tions. In a letter to Chairman; J. J$
Krug of the war production board,
Mr. Truman outlined a five-point
program for orderly reconversion
of industry from munitions to con
sumer goods manufacture. This
was its theme:
"Every opportunity must be giv
en to private business to exercise j
its ingenuity and forcefulness in
speeding resumption of civilian
production, subject to war needs."
But he said that in order to
achieve unprecedented civilian
production it is necessary that
WPB "continue for the present
some of the effective measures it
adopted to achieve unprecedented
war, production."
This point had a direct bearing
on a current sharp dispute be
tween WPB and the office of price
administration as to whether con
trols on materials may be lifted
when the latter agency feels they
must be retained to help control
the cost of living.
While the president said clearly
that controls should be lifted "as
soon as they are no longer need
ed," he added that there must be
continued allocation of scarce ma
terials when this is necessary to
provide low-priced products "es
sential to the continued success of
the stabilization program."
