were bombarding and strafing

landing could be made quite eas
ily after the terrific pounding the
island took, but to his surprise
. and discomfort there were still
many , live Japanese troops left to
make things hot. for the landing

Hold Conclave
This year's annual summer
camp of the Oregon State Farm
ers union is being held this week
at Camp Adams, ; near ; Colton.
Monday's program included a con
ference attended by educational
directors from the various locals
of the union. President Ronald
Jones, Brooks, led the discussions.
On Tuesday members of the re
serve, the 10 to 14 year age, took
over. Their camp continued until
Thursday when the junior mem
bers arrived. The camp wilE close
Sunday when members of the
farmers union from all parts oi the
state will gather. Principal speaker
is National Vice-President Herbert
Rolph.
Mrs. Anna Knower, state edu
cational director for the union, is
in charge of the camp. She is be
ing assiscted by Mrs. Ray Barker,
Mrs. Gene Dietz, Mrs. Carl Street
er, MEss Sylvia Claggott and
others.
Subsidies for i
Sugar Raised
WASHINGTON, Aug. 2 -&)-The
agriculture department took
another step today to increase pro
duction of sugar by raising sub
sidy payments to sugar cane and
sugar beet processors.
Secretary of Agriculture Ander
son yesterday announced an ' in
crease in the subsidy payments for
producers or growers of sugar
cane or sugar beets.
Sugar beet processors of the
crop will be paid a subsidy of 18
cents a hundred pounds of re
fined sugar compared with 12', a
cents last year, to offset increased
production costs. -V ;
Processors . of 1946 7 crop sugar
cane in Puerto Rico, the Virgin
Islands a.nd Hawaii will receive
15 cents a hundred pounds of raw
sugar. - ' - v .
Gov. Snell to Meet With
Republican Chairman
Gov. Earl SnelL along with a
number of other, state officials
here, will spend Friday in Port
land conferring with Herbert
Brewnell, Jr., chairman of the re
publican national committee.
Brownell is making a tour of
the 11 western states in connec
tion with . raising funds for. the
1948 campaign and party organiz
ation. His only Oregon address
will be in Portland.
Boys Attempt to Derail
Vital War Cargo Train
PORTLAND, Aug. 2 -P)- Two
boys 9 and 12 who admitted plac
ing a railroad tie on a Union Pa
cific track were in the custody
of juvenile court yesterday.
Although five cars ran over the
tie, none was derailed because the
train, carrying war cargo, . was
moving at only five miles an hour,
trainmen said. -
