' -.i..-" "t-V:- Infantile- Paralysis: There is a statistical increase in the number of infantile paralysis cases so far this year ' as compared with ' the same period last year. However, officials of the United States pub lie health service (USPHS) say the public should not become un duly alarmed. The records " show 1,115 i cases reported to USPHS through June 23, compared with 782' for 'the corresponding period in . ' 1544 when total cases mounted -to 19, 033, second highest on record. (Worst year was 1918, with 27, 383.) .-! ' . But the USPHS says there's reason to belieyt that many of the cases being , reported as new this year actually had their onset during, the height of last year's major epidemic. ' : Another encouraging factor is that cases for the- week . ended June 23 ta tailed only 11S com pared with 125 for the correspon ding week a .year ago. : i Stepping Stone?: There is spec ulation in some circles that the new post for Judge Schwellen bach as secretary of labor-- may be a stepping stone in the direction of the supreme court. He fre quently was mentioned as a pos sibility for the high tribunal while he was In the senate. " Other sources look upon the , new Jaboc secretary as a strong possibility for " 1948 rice presi dential candidate. 1 - . Sherman for Mltscher?: Look for Vice Admiral . Mare Mitscher, colorful leader of - the legendary carrier task force 58 which has brought immeasurable ' grief j to Nippon, . to wind up in a top flight, assignment 'in the navy's high command in Washington. j . '. A strong possibility for stepping into hi Pacific command is Rear Admiral Frederick C. Sherman, a carrier task' group j'comroander who has been through the whole carrier war beginning in the Coral Sea. He was skipper of the carrier Lexington sunk in the Coral Sea battle. : His assignment would mean another star for him. i V. "v - '5 .
