Experienced Vacation School
Worker Heads Salem Program
Mr ;i . - I . f t " -
Salem's Daily Vacation Bible school wi(l open Monday in five
churches, under the'supervision of Mrs. Irving A. Fox. She has helped
in the Salem summer vacation bible school each jy ear since she came
here eight years ago, as she has been active: in the work for all the
years since she was graduated from college. ' j
' The inception of the work of the Daily Vacation Bible school was in
New; .York City. Here Dr. Bow
ville conceived the idea of using
college students at liberty during
the summer to work among the
slum children. These boys and
girls,' whose only playgrounds
were the busy streets of lower
Manhattan, readily responded to
the varied and interesting pro
grams offered. The schools con
tinued and spread to other large
cities and were conducted for a
number of year j in Chicago,
where Mrs. Fox became acquaint
ed with their work. Realizing that
the; children of suburban areas
needed the same type of sum
mer program, Mrs. Fox planned
and conducted the first daily va
cation Bible school ever held out
side the slum districts in Chicago
or New York.
The idea "caught" and the sec
ond year she was asked to plan
and supervise the work lor 300
such schools in the Chicago area.
Dr. j Bowville, visiting these
schools that year, called them "art
schools, j because, flff course, the
work done by children living in
the other' communities was on a
higher, level than could be ex
pected from the less privileged
group.
Practically every year since she
left school, Mrs. Fox has worked
in a daily vacation Bible school,
teaching, directing or supervising
the work in all types of schools-
