Cow Starts Paying
After Second Year
Of Production
The first two years of a cow's
producing life are roo m-a n d
board days - - days in which she
pays for her keep from her birth
until she freshens for the first
time.
This is what experienced Wil
lamette valley cattle men report.
Consequently what a cow pro
duces year after year is a much
better record than what she may
produce in one year.
This is where the national dairy
herd improvement program comes
in. By looking over records, pros
pective dairy cow buyers are able
to choose from a long-time produ
cing strain.
In some cow families, cattle are
not so long-lived as in others. A
cow that can produce well for 10
or 12 years is much more valu
able than one that dies at the age
of five or six years.
The three qualities most desir
able in a dairy cow are, first,
high productivity; second, long
evity and third, type.
TRACTORS DANGEROUS
The national safety council fig
ures show that 50 per cent or
more of the accidents with farm
machinery involve tractors. If
1945 farm fatalities with tractors
follow the pattern of past years,
the principal causes ef injuries
will be overturning, falling from
or being thrown off the- tractor.
accidents with power take - off
shafts, accidents while cranking,
and accidents from fire or fumes.
HENS HAVE LIMITATIONS
In spite of lights, vitamins, hor
mones and the many other things
experimented with to encourage
laying, poultry experts have yet
to find the stimulus capable of
making a hen lay more than one
egg each 24 hours.
MOW GRASS OFTEN
To rid the lawn of crabgrass,
mow often at m" inches to re
duce seed. Feed lawn heavily in
the fall. Crabgrass is a persistent
annual which spreads by seed.
Keep the seedheads off.
