Oregon Must
Seek Tourists
Says Kirkham
j A regatta on the river at Salem
properly labeled and cared -for
historic, shrines, and interest of
th citizenry in the many tourist
values of the area could be de
veloped as invaluable contribu
tions to what may well become
Oregon's third great industry -recreation
- - Art Kirkham, vicer
president of KOIN, told Salem
Chamber of Commerce members
at their luncheon meeting Monday
coon. " V V . - ' : "!
; To get its share of the tourist
business, which rose from 3Vi to 7
billion dollars in the years be
tween 1936 and 1841, Oregon
must take stock of its many ad
vantages, invest in them and pub
licize their presence here, Kirk
ham declared in no uncertain
terms.
f Letters from residents . of this
area indicating that : the scenic
wonders of Silver Creek falls are
comparatively unknown to the
very persons in Salem who would
be asked by tourists for travel
suggestions, that such historic
spots and structures as the site of
the Lee mission and the mission
buildings go unmarked and un
cared for, were read by Kirkham.
Oregon with more to offer than
California In the way of climate,
scenery, parks, public beaches and
fishing, got $50,000,000 In tourist
: money in 1941, while California
received $600,000,000, the speaker
declared.
j Gov. Earl Snell's recognition of
'the "great potential in tourist bus
iness," revealed in his address to
j the recent legislature, brought
j praise from Kirkham, who also
j paid tribute to Gov. Oswald West's
I action which saved to the public
1 297 miles of beaches, and to
t Charles A. Sprague, former gover
nor, for his editorial; support of
i highway building programs de
! signed to bring tourist business to
the .state and not just channel it
i through between Washington and
i California.

Grains Suffer
Sharp Losses
In Final Hour
CHICAGO, May 21 JPf May
rye and September barley broke
the five-cent limit during the last
15 minutes of grain futures trad
ing today when a flurry of long
liquidation uncovered J stop loss
orders. " '
Short covering supported"iMay
wheat and corn, the latter closing
at the $1.18Vi ceiling, but all other
futures contracts suffered sharp
losses during the late sell-off.
Analysts regarded the break a
necessary technical correction
since prices have risn sharply in
recent weeks, rye ana wneat sell
ing at new 10-year highs.
At the close of trading Satur
day the open interest in May con
tracts totaled 5,036,000 bushels of
wheat. 2.198.000 bushels of corn,
4,969,000 bushels of oats, 3,959,000
bushels of rye and 748,000 bushels
of barley.
At the finish, wheat was to
2 lower than Saturday's close,
May Sl.75-1.76. Corn was un
changed to down 1. May $1.18.
Oats were off lVi to 3, May
63-. Rye was 3 to 5 lower,
May $1.39. Barley was down
4H to 5, May $1.01.
Most of the trade was devoted
to evening up market positions be
fore the close of trading in the
May delivery.
Prof it Cashing
Causes Many
Stocks to Fall
NEW YORK, May 21-;p)-While
assorted utilities did well in to
day's stock market, profit cashing
on the recent upswing reduced
many industrial leaders fractions
to 2 points.
The favorable postwar outlook
serves as the principal bidding in
spiration although some customers
trimmed accounts because of the
thought that the rise to 8-year
peaks might bring out snore liqui
dation of stale holdings earnings
and dividends still were bullish.
Transfers of 1,080,000 shares
compared with 1,430,000 Friday.
Chrysler fell 2 points and lesser
casualties were Hudson , motors,
General Motors, U. S. SteeL Beth
lehem, Southern Pacific, . Great
Northern, Texas Co., U. S. Rubber,
Dow Chemical and Du Pont. On
the upside were American' Tele
phone and American and Foreign
power and preferred at new highs;
United aircraft, Consolidated Vul
tee, National power, N. Y. Cen-
Ltral and Delaware St Hudson.
