PORTLAND, Ore., April 27-(AFyThe Portland Beavers continued
their winning ways tonight by defeating the Oakland Oaks, 3-1, in
a Pacific Coast league contest. The win, coupled with Seattle's inac
tivity because of wet grounds, gave Portland a half-game hike to her I
lead over the league. -

swift and sharp curves. His oppo
nent, soft-tossing Dick Groshong,
also passed only one and fanned
10. His assortment of tantalizing
curves had the Viks swinging off
balance most of the game. '
The Vikings jumped on Gro
shong early and then -settled back
while Carroll took over. In the
first inning after the Salem junior
had retired the Corvallis side on
strikes, Dick Hendrie lined a sin
gle to left with one out But Craig
fanned but Roger Dasch walked.
Johnny Dalke then popped a wind
blown blooper which dropped be
hind Shortstop Ed Hunter and
Hendrie scored
All scoring was wound up in the
second frame and Carroll himself
took a big hand in it Jack Mal
min went down swinging to start
it off, but Dick Allison was safe
when his loft to center was drop
ped by Ed Mason. .The only Cor
vallis bobble of the game, inci
dentally. Then Carroll walloped
a line triple to deep right-center,
counting Allison, and came in him
self when Bud McKinney skied to
center.
Carroll gave up his first hit in
the third, another wind-bloom
blooper which fell in front of Mal
min. Groshong and Hal Wehmeier
picked up scratch hits in the fifth
for the other Corvallis pair, but
Carroll whiffed Keith Shinn to es
cape trouble.
Carroll's only walk came in the
final frame to leadoff hitter
Sprick, and the pass nearly result
ed in a Spartan tally. Sprinck
immediately swiped second and
rambled on to third when Allison's
throw bounded into center field.
That was the only Salem error of
the game. With the enemy on
third and no outs, however, Car
roll fanned Jim Fox, made a lung
ing catch of Groshong's bat-end
bloop and finished up by striking
out huge Catcher Bob Kean.
Groshong didn't do badly him
self after his first two frames and
.outside an infield hit by Johnny
Dalke in the third, pitched airtight
baseball to the end. Almost un
believable for kids' baseball, not a
wild pitch or passed bail was
made in the game.
Salem's next league outing
comes next Friday when the Gur
nee Flesher flock goes to Albany.
