On Pressures
5 . i;
Advance information on legis
lation! to be sqpnsidered by the
state -legislature would only in
crease the demands of the pres
sure groups, in the opinion of
John Steelhammer, Marion coun
ty legislator. He was the luncheon
speaker at the Salem Credit asso
ciation luncheon Friday noon.
The statement on the pressure
group! came in answer to a ques
tion as to why the legislature did
not introduce and adopt business
on results of a state wide poll in
stead of in a '"Jitterbug" manner.
Steelhammer pointed to Califor
nia s system ox meeting ana then
adjourning after bills are Intro
duced! to study them. He referred
to "trips to th islands, and in
tima ted this was a form of "pres
sure" exerted by interested groups
to control legislation.

sided at the luncheon meeting.
