April 11 IMS 4 FAUZ TCI r Furriers Asked To Tern Paper Dags lo Salvage i Paper bags in which ground limestone and fertilizer is deliv red to farms constitute large potential supply of critically need ed paper which can be salvaged for war purposes, C I. Sersan- - us, chairman of the Oregon state salvage committee, reports. These high-grade kraft bags, containing a hundred pounds of lime cr fertilizer, number into the hundreds of thousands on Ore- ' gon " farms, Sersanous says in pointing out that much of this paper is now being burned.; Firms handling salvaged paper have of fered to accept all of these lime fertilizer bags they can get Ser sanous cautions, however, - that and bags containing tar liners are not acceptable but the tar liners may usually be removed easily. Moss Should Be Removed From Lawns Soon Moss on lawns is a condition that must be taken care of in any moist, dark climate. Weeds come in more rapidly, too,' because of this lack of sunshine and because of packing of the top soil. Where grass roots are thrifty, soil loose and enriched, drainage sharp, the moss that comes in will disappear as soon as spring growth really starts. Moss , is really only ab sence of grass. l grass is thin and poor, if moss persists and weeds are abun dant, look to conditions under ground. Check up on soil content. on drainage, on the kind and am ount of seed used. How about ' regular feeding? How about soil loosening? How about water dur ing summer? Divide the lawn into portions with lines (not imaginary ones) and go over it section by section. taking out all weeds and their roots. This will loosen up the soil to a degree. Then fertilize with whatever fertilizer you can get. Labor Assistant From Dallas Ray E. Kliever of Dallas has been appointed as farm labor as sistant In Polk county. Carnes, Elkton farm er, has developed an automatic regulator for electric feed grind ers. The automatic feed flow reg ulator ior small electric feed grinders was patented but has not yet been manufactured. F. E. Price, one of a number of contributors to a symposium pre pared by the rural electrification administration covering recom- mendations agricultural engineers from 11 states, is enthusiastic over the electric feed grinder regula tor. Price also explains that the REA report is intended for American manufacturers who are preparing to market new and improved equipment for farmers after the war. Much research has been done by college and other labora tories resulting in new- electric equipment for use on 'farms, that has never been carried to the manufacturing stage. Manufac turers will soon be ready to spend time, money and effort, in "devel oping such devices. Ship's Log Tells Of First Garden For Oregon So far as is known, the lirst garden in Oregon was planted in January, 1796. The record is con tained in the log of the ship Ruby, which was anchored in the lower Columbia at that time: "Wednes day I took a party of our people and cleared a small island which we called Tree Island Possession. and made a garden, planting In dian corn and sowing radishes. mustard, cresses, celery and tur nip seed . . . In October we found the potatoes aboundant and large and good, the radishes had gone to seed. There were several beans, but no appearance of peas, mustard, cresses or celerv. the latter we ascribed to the troop of birds which inhabited the islet, j and the former to the peas hav- i ing been kiln dried, as the soil everywhere is rich and good." Hundreds Expect To Attend Sale In GiehaHs Hundreds of dairv farraor nA breeders are expected to be on hand at the annual Pacific North west Guernsey consignment to be held at Chehalis. Wash April 26. A total of 72 head are listed to go under the hammer of Auctioneer Earl O. Walter of Filer, Idaho. Elmer J. Mearinws nf Pnrtion . -- " v. .avails, neldman for the American r.nwn. sey Cattle club, says that "select ing a bull to head your herd from these sires will save many a breeder a lot' of time and expense in running around trying to lo cate one. At the sale you'll find the best already picked out for you." Recommend That AAA Continue Recommendations favoring con tinuance of the AAA program af ter the war, with reference to wheat, and urging that its opera tions be made more self financing, were adopted -during the past week at a conference held at Wal la Walla and attended by farm or ganization leaders from Washing, ton, Idaho and Oregon. L The suggested program: is de signed, its sponsors say, to meet the competition of more easterly sections with their lower freight rates, and nearness to markets. UBa. CHAN fin Dr.T.TXaaiJUj. ' Wheat Leads Strong Rally In Grain Pit CHICAGO. ADril 1 1--Grain markets broke sharolv in early tradins today but auicklv recover ed on a strong mid-session rally which sent May wheat to $1.74, the highest since late 1924 and 1925 when the price came within minor fractions of $2.05 per bushel. :,; Reasons for the 1924-25 bull market were a heavy European de mand for North American grains and failure of the Canadian wheat crop which boosted prices at Win nipeg to $2.20 a bushel At the finish May wheat was within 2Vi cents of the futures ceiling, and rye and barley were as much as three cents above the previous close. The early break, result of sell ins, nromDted by the eovemment report predicting a record crop of sez,5 15,000 bushels of 5 winter wheat this year, halted after the July contract had lost as much as 1 cents. ''"( After the eafly offerings had been absorbed the wheat1 market quickly did an: abou face with shorts and cash -brokers the best buyers. Complete relief from the shortage of box cars on western lines is not expected for several months and there is a scarcity of grain at terminal points. At the finish wheat was V low er to 1 higher than yesterday's close, May $1.74 . -Corn was up 1! to 2, May $1.14T's-1.15. Oats were M to IV higher. May 65 66. Rye was IVa to 3 higher, May $132-1.32. Barley was up V to 3, May $1.09. , ' :J' "- Stocks Make Best Advance In 2 Months NEW YORK, April 11-The stock market today moved into its best advance in two months as broad .' buying . developed Fin the wake of early strength in rails, motors and steels.
