Farmers Told
To Give Help
Suitable Deal
"With the manpower shortage
more pronounced than ever before
and with-; the heavy demand pe
riod on the horizon users of emer
gency farm labor, should take ev
ery precaution to see that workers
get the best possible deal In order
to keep them on the farms," Ralph
Laird, emergency farm labor as
sistant said Saturday.
"Marion county farmers demon
strated lat xear that they knew
the difficulties to be overcome and
are making a start in the right di
rection this , yea r," he said.
"Most big. users of labor are
providing, their own transporta
tion, realizing that the old cars of
the transients have gone to the
junk yardsi ,
"We must realize that most of
the emergency farm laborers are
not hardened to farm work this
early in the year. They should be
broken in gradually. The volun
teer wants to help produce food or
he wouldn't have applied for
work. He is willing to learn and
expects to be taught
'if he is gradually broken into
his new work, given fair food and !
the prevailing pay for his particu
lar work be will stick to one job
until it is 'done. Many of these
workers are far from home and
any persons! interest shown him,
locking to his comfort and health
is likely to reap a harvest for the
employer. We must remember that
these volunteer workers are pa
triots engaged in an essential in
dustry second only to toting a gun
against the enemy. Without food
we will lttee the war."
