Bronze Star
Medal to
Watterson
SILVERTON Melvin Griffin
Watterson, motor machinist's mate
1c, has been awarded the Bronze
Star medal by Vice Admiral. Kin
kaid. The presentation was made
by Cmflr. David J. Walsh An-
sonia, Conn, commanding officer
or motor torpedo boat squadrons
training rtriter at Melville, RI.
The citation reads . in part:
"While serving as leading engi
neer, he participated in many com
bat, patrols into enemy territory.
Patrols in which he participated
sank or destroyed, much Japanese
shipping and shelled numerous im
portant enemy installations. His
boat came' under enemy short fire
on many .occasions. While in ac
tion' against the enemy a serious
concentration of exhaust fumes
developed in the engine room.
With disregard for his own safety,
he gallantly remained at his duty
post until his boat could withdraw
to-a place of safety and make
emergency repairs."
Watterson is a son of Mrs. Nel
lie Watterson, Silverton teacher.
