Oregon Prep Coaches Pow-Wow, Recommend Athletic Changes
The Oregon High School
Coaches association tat In on
their annual banquet meeting In
conjunction with the state hoop
tourney yesterday beneath the
Senator, hotel, and after listen--Ing

flock of recommendations , for
ehanres In the state's prep ath

Well over 5t coaches recom
mended that's new district set

about as soon as possible, return
in the state to the prewar .16
dlstrict system i, Instead - of the
present eight. It was pointed out
that no travel distances have
been saved by the t-team plaa.
Travel curtailments were listed
as original reasons for the! slash
ing of the hoop district field.
The coaches also recommended
that basketbaU officials' school
be established before the start of
each season, same to be con
ducted by the OHSAA. Statewide
uniformity in whistle-tooting Is
sought. Marble Cook, anattach-

A, 9 and C divisions, and that

Final Battle I -t
With Pioneers
J (Continued from page 6)
while OC rang tne bell, and the
Pioneers took: over the 'lead at
9-8 with 3:20; gone. Buckets by
Captain Bob Watson and Darrel
Riggs just before the gun gave it
back to Medford, however, 11-9.
r Coach Al Simpson's crew again
took the initiative in the second
frame and galloped the lead to 18-9
before Oregon City, now making
numerous Medford fouls pay off,
finally crept up once more. I Dick
Fawcett hit with 5:30 gone to push
Medford 21-14 out front and mom
ents later Big Riggs made it 24-17
for the halt , :
But all the while Medford was
being tooted jdown for fouliiTg
especially Riggs. And Riggs was
outbattling OC's 6-foot 5-inch Len
RLnearson for! rebounds that first
half, netting the Tornado an ad
vantage. It was the lull before the
storm for Medford, for exactly 1:40
into the third frame 'Riggs: went
, out! with his allotment of infrac
tions. Immediately the so-far out
gunned Pioneers went to work.
Little Art Jones was the lad
who stepped forth mostly for OC,
and with a staccato of hits at
Medford's basket, almost person
ally pulled the Pioneers up even
and across the hump at the third
quarter. Jones hit four straight
field goals after Rinearson had
potted a pair, and then it was Bob
Misiey ana lunearson again on
, fast break and tip-in who gave
the Pioneers the 34-32 lead, Rine
arson was now gathering in most
of j the important rebounds and
starting the Pioneer scoring plays.
With. Medford again off key af
ter Howie VVfhillock pivoted one
in from the key to regain a- 37-35
lead, Keith jBakkum, Ri parson
and Misley scored to push OC in
front again, 39-37, with 3:15 left
Bakkum holed out a follow-up
for 41-38 with 1:20 left, and then
after Jones, Misley and Bakkum
fouled out in the roughs! battle.
Jerry Ross brought Medford up to
39-41 and then 40-41 with two
- free tosses. For another minute it
was up-and-down, up-and-down,
- but no scoring - as the seconds
ticked to thej finish line. Medford
had two desperation shots near the
. end, but missed both by inches.
Losing Riggs hurt plenty, and

Suarez Wins
Bout oh Foul
Gathering rebounds, a favorite pastime In the state tourney at Wil
lamette this week, is just what Medford and Vernonia are attempt
ing in this shot. Larry Hayes (6) and Parrel! Riggs (facing Hayes)
seem to be doing okeh for Medford while Captain Bob Watson (4)
looks on. Vefnonlsna dlstlnsruishable are Fred Lanon (3), Duke
Byers (6) and Ralph Stnrdevant (outstretched hand at right)?
it was just what the doc .ordered
for OC. - ' '
In field goals scored, Medford
had 15 to OC's 14, but the Pioneers
countered with 13 free tosses made
good to Medford's 10. "Rhino"
Rinearson, a goose-egg his in the
scoring column against Hijlsboro
Thursday night, roared back with
14 last night to lead scoring. Jones
had 11, just as many as were
gathered by Dick Fawcett of the
now-deflated Tornado.
The victory gained Oregon City
her first finals date In history in
the tourney. The Pioneers were
here nine straight years, befon
this, but always faded out. This
time her highly rated Red and
Whites can get no worse than sec
ond place, something the school
has never had before.
It was a bitter piU for Simpson,
for he was shooting for a third
straight state championship after
grabbing one with Ashland last
year in basketball and another
