Mr. and Mrs. Willie C Fisher,
1902 Broadway, Salem, has been
promoted from sergeant to staff
sergeant . ,
Fisher who is chief of all gun
sections in a battery of the 120th
field artillery "battalion with the
32nd "Red Arrow" division, en
tered the army in February 1942,
and has been overseas since April,
1912. He has participated in three
i campaigns, and holds the Bronze
. Star for meritorious conduct -and
outstanding devotion to duty dur-
I ing the operations on Leyte, in the
Philippine.

Harry Brecheen of the St. Louts
Cardinals. He played errorless
ball, ranking fourth with 39

announced today.
They; are Marine Colonel John
. Wilson. 49, of Corvalhs, and
navy pharsaacisfs mate first class
Vermoine V. Klaus, 24, of Dallas.
Colonel Wilson, a veteran ma-j
tine sad holder of the Bronze Star
medal for his part in the Bougain-i
ville rampaign, was awarded the
Legion af Merit for "exceptionally
able and efZective' leadership" of
an artillery regiment on Goam.
He is a member of the Third
marine! division, now taking part
in the fighting on Iwo.
Pharmacist s Mate Klauss was
decorated with the Bronze Star for
his work as a hospital corpsman
attached to a marine infantry bat
talion on Saipan and; Tinian. He
was wounded on Saipan "and was
awarded the . Purple Heart. His
division, the fourth, is also fight-j
ing on Iwo. ; t , . Ill

Dodging Jap mines! and mortar
fire were among the hazards en
countered by Pvt. Bill B. Wertgen-
roth of Salem, Oregon, while lay
ing telephone wire in the Leyte
island campaign. For 'his tenacity
in securing communications, Wen
genroth was promoted to technic- j
ian fifth grade, his battery com
mander announced recently.
Landing with the i famed sev
enth infantry division the first
day of the Philippine invasion,
Wengenroth saw much action
an artillery' wire man. Repairing
Jap sliced lines, he learned to
tread lightly through mine traps I
and once was pinned down for
an hour and a half by an. enemy' I
mortar barrage.
Wengenroth attended high
school in Woodburn, then worked
as a tree surgeon in Portland. 1
With eight years in the Oregon
national guard, he joined the fed
eral service in August 1940. Leav
ing the army in October 1940, he
re-entered in April,:) 1942 at Ft
Lewis, going to Camp Roberts for
basic training. He transferred to
the seventh division at San Luis
Obispo, July. 1942. He is a vet
eran - of Attu and Kwajalein
well as the Philippines.
