I kets here last night, the Chema
I wa Indians copped the Marion
! county T3" basketball title with
a 63 to 20 win. It was the second
straight win for the Redskins In
a best two out of three series, and
earns them the right to take on
St Johns high of Milwaukie next
week in the sub-district elimina
tions. '
The outcome was never in doubt
last night, with Chemawa throw
ing a blanket defense at the Lions
and galloping to a 38 to 9 half-
time lead. Buck Logan was the
offensive leader tossing in 22
points, while Chet Ashman and
Merle Williams each canned an
even dozen.
In the prelim Chemawa's Pa
pooses won the "B" team cham
pionship of the Duration league
by beating the Molalla reserves
35 to 31 with Tommy Williams
hitting 11 points for high point
honors. Each team had beaten the
other once in the regular season's
play. . .

way to making it two straight with
the basketball team.
In case you haven't noticed,
Coach "Chief Thompson's gang
has captured the flag in the Mar
ion county race. The! Indian kids
are now but half-a-dozen games
away j from the district B-l berth
in the state tourney, and from
what we've seen of other class B
units 7 hereabouts this season.
there's nothing much which says
the ex-Oregon State fullback won't
herd his team smack into the blue-
ribbon classic next month.
Statistically, Chemawa has won
23 .and lost only five games' this
season-, four of the five losses to
class "A" schools. Up until Wood
burn's Duration champs toppled
'em Friday night, the Indians had
captured 11 in a row, Including
two lopsided nods over both Stay
ton i and . Silverton. class "A"
schools awaiting district 11 tour
ney play. Better still in this giant-
killing field, the Indians trounced
strong Lebanon two weeks ago on
the Warriors' own floor'.
Not a big ball club as basketball
teams go, the Indians more than
of fse4r this with a well-balanced
scoring attack. The Redskins, and
there's but eight of 'em on the
team, seem to divvy up the scoring
from game to game. One night
swift little Bill Yallup, an excel
lent ball-handler, incidentally, will
lead the way. The next night it
might be Howard Logan, a 5-foot
10-inches, or Chet Ashman, 6-foot
1-mcher center. Then lanky 6-
footer Merle Williams, the football
triple-threater, takes over the next
night or shares with Calvin Pic-
ar6S another 6-footer. Bob Satia-
cum gets in his share also, as does
Sylf ester Minthorn. All were
members of Thompson's "T tot
ing championship football team.
Whether they make the state
tourney or not remains to be seen.
Even if they upset the dope and
fail to make it, they'll have none
theless played a successful season.
The Indians finished second in the
"A" Duration circuit not at all
bad; for a class "B" school.
And from the looks of Thomp
son's Bee team basketball material
and: the undergrads on last fall's
championship grid eleven (10 of
the 11 starters), the Indians! stand
a fine chance of. holding that re
gained spot in the sun for quite a
spell.
