WASHINGTON, Jan. 2T.-P)-A
semi-essential ' dassifieatian for
baseball to keep the game going
In 1945 may be one of the possibil
ities that bigwigs of the sport will
discuss m New York Friday? Base
ball people, reluctant all along to
be quoted on wartime problems,
nevertheless have indicated they
feel a 'semi-essential rating could
be Justified on this basis
During the ball season, lei avail
able "players follow then- profes
sion; during the dx months off
season, use them in the war jobs
for which they are best fitted. In
this way, ball players could per
form double duty not only con
tribute to the essential victory un
dertaking, but also do their normal
bit in aiding. morale,
This might make it possible for
the army, navy and war manpower
. commission to channel back into
the sport some physically rejected
. men, plus others discharged from
""service and 4-F's not yet called
up for ';. review . under proposed
manpower control , legislation,
Baseball's position ; is further
outlined by its wartime record
to' date: number of games played
In training camps, 800. Men in
uniform admitted free 'to league
games, 4,500,000. Contributions in
high figures to ball-and-bat funds,
In radio, picture and personal ap
pearances here and overseas.
' Exemplary action in being
among the first to carry out office
of defense transportation requests
to reduce travel, winning public
praise from ODT,
; ! High percentage of men in uni
form of 5,800 players in game
. at time, of Pearl Harbor,' 5,400
now in. service . . , few, if any,
outstanding players returned to
i the game. -
: j Manpower needs for continu
ance: 1,800 of the 4-Fs not yet
. called, - and of rejected and -dis
charged ' men, would supply both
majors and miners. Last season.
thereiwere jonly 1,270 players .
the. majors can get along on about
. 100.
