Ric ling on the tair of blizzard
like snows, the winter's most se
vera cold wave engulfed the
northeast .yesterday (Thursday),
plunging temperatures to record
smashing below zero markings.
Seven deaths' in New England
and New York were attributed to
the cold blast.. . '
High winds, which' accompa
nied, the cold, whipped up snow
drifts in West Virginia, Pennsyl
vanid and upper New York state,
blocking roads, disrupting trans
portation, stranding automobiles
and. in, one case, marooning a
school bus.
A sampling of morning temper
atures throughout the area
showed:
Cowlesville, NY, 32 below; Sy
racuse, -14.5, lowest on record
therttfor this date; Albany, 12
below, and New York City, zero,
coldest January 25 on record.
Aided by clear skies, thermom
eters inched upward during the
day. n New York City, the tem
perature was 16 above during the
afternoon. Weather officials
looked for a break today (Friday).
Neair Whitney Point, NY, the
driver of a school bus that had
been missing 24 hours walked
- nine miles tnrough snowdrifts to
rprt he had delivered 40 chil
dren safely before the bus was
rouuooned. The driver spent the
night in a farmhouse.
At Homer, NY, 30 draftees were
stranded overnight They had ar
rived on a night train to take
army and navy physical examina-
