wonder at this loss of unifica
tion is not enough, when this lost
quality can be regained. j.
Let us consider the possibility
here set forth by a group from
the Salem high school class jof
1942 bur last year in cords
and loud sweaters and bow-ties.
We believe that at .one time Sa
lem entertained the idea 6f con
structing a civic center and! it
was an amplification of this idea
that started- us. Suppose such a
structure was erected a unify
ing center where parents, chil
dren, teachers and 'ministers
could meet, work and play to
gether along coordinated lines.
How many postwar problems
would be eradicated if there fas
such a place 'where these four
could mingle, study and produce'
together. ' a - - ; - T
How could the various insti
tutions of our area fit; into the
picture? First of all there is the
, city schools.. The center cotild
afford outlet for all children iin
all age groups of our school
system. They could hen develop
knowledge,' arredation and
self expression through art, mu
sic, drama, public speaking, so
ciology and political science, its
facilities could be trained toward
them in teaching rfiarfpiir hu
man conduct, and : practickl
skills. '

as a group, would be the council
of churches. To them the, center
' would provide a gateway to the
local youtn and a means at pre-
ventina 1 that current erlfna . of
' the Cross. Third, we would list
the specialty schools of the area
'dealing ia painting, ballet, mod-
em. dance, writing, and orches
; txal arts. These grBups could use
Valve
tne center, as a groving ground
, for their students and as , a
showcase recital hall. Fourth, we
will, list the special service ,
. groups, community concert asso- , ,
. ciation, TJivic , organfzations and
local art groups, all of whom
csmld fit in with excellent ad
vantage. - , " f ;;: Vs 5
Having suggested the groups
v individually, let's knit them to
gether. If the center had, in ad
dition to a fine stage and audi
torium,' ample workshop space '
for the various fields of endeav
or, extensive space for social
events of all sort Le, dances,
x parties, mass meetings), the en
tire residential body of Salem
would belong to the organiza
tion, or better, BE the organiza
tion. Our children could "grow
up under concerted and far-
, sighted supervision; parents
could meet and understand the
feachers and other parents; the'
jjunister could meet the whole; i
the groups could put practical
use to their wares; skills could
be taught, and restrained or un
developed talents could be
- brought forward into the light
of a new life. Under intelligent
management, the center , could
; pay for itself largely. ;
So there, people of Salem, you
have a plan put forth hon
estly, believed in sincerely. We t
dont want to push buttons, we :
dont want rocket ships half as
much as we want to file the
edges, weld the factions, stop
the destruction, and live togeth
er, as Winston CrmrrMH put it.
In ' "nobility, "I majesty and in
peace.' Cup this article, parents,
send it 'to your sons and daugh
ters; ponder it, dismiss it not
lightly, but write us what you
believe and want. i ' r
We, . the grpup from Salem
high, 1942, rest our case. We,
will attempt to convince you no
farther. However, before We put
the volume back on the shelf,
consider well the importance in
volved in how we shape our
destinies after this war. The Age
of Mistakes must end .when the
guns cease, for this war must
fulfill, the only justification of
any conflict freedom, with
security, for all men.") ..jf ',
