"tU Messiah" Handel's Oratorio to Be Sung Today At High School by Chorus of 300 This is the day to which the music-loving people of Salem have been looking forward with pleasurable anticipation, for this after noon at 3:30 the Salem Oratorio society will give its annual Christ mas performance of Handel's "The Messiah," at the high school au ditorium. No admission charge win be made. One of the purposes of the society is to bring the great, oratorios to the people 6f Salem and -vicinity. The chorus of 300 voices will be assisted by . soloists of out- . standing ability. These are, Vir ginia Ward Elliott and Margaret , Skruggs, s o p r a nos, Josephine Albert Spaulding, contralto, John Schmidt, jr., tenor, and Mark Daniels. l?ass. ; Linfield college knew Mrs. El liott as a professor of voice for a number of years. She studied - : voice iii New York and at Illi nois Wesleyan, and is now and for several years has been choir , director of Salem First Presby terian qhurch. Miss Skruggs re ceived her vocal training at Ob erlin college under distinguished teachers." She was on the music faculties of Milwaukee-Downing college and the state university at Bowling Green, Ohio. She is at present a member of the fac ulty of the schooLof music at Willamette university. Salem people know Mrs. Spaulding well. A graduate of Willamette, she studied music at the Julliard school in New York and under Maude Conley Hopper of Seat tle. Mr. Schmidt also is a home town artist He has sung the tenor solos in "The Messiah" and other oratorios on several occa sions. He attended Willamette university and, the University of Oregon, and was a voice pupil of .the late Nikola Zan of Portland. He is director of the choir of the Salem First Christian church. The name of Mark Daniels is a by-word among music lovers of the. riorthwest. The bass arias of all the great oratorios are fa miliar to him. Formerly, he. sang with, the American Opera com pany in Chicago and with' the Ravenia Opera company. In or atorio work, he has been heard frequently as soloist with the Portland Symphony chorus. The chorus of 300 voices will be directed by Dean Melvin H. Geist of Willamette university, and orchestra will accompany the' singers, and will be con ducted by Professor Lewis Pan kaskie of Willamette. Maurice Brennan will be organist, and Bennett Luddin pianist.
