When the little symphony orchestra, made
up of former Salem musicians, many of whom
have now turned professional, appears in
concert at .Waller hall on August 21, it will ,
be directed by Lewis Pankasie, member of the
'Willamette university school of music faculty.

Philharmonic Is Sponsor
I The concert will be under the sponsorship
of the Salem Philharmonic association. There
will be no admission charge but a silver of
fering will be taken to defray expenses cf the
concert
Marjorie and Kathleen Broer. daughters of
Mr. and Mrs. Fred Broer, are former mem
bers of the Philharmonic orchestra. They have "
been students at the Juilliard School of Music
in New York City.
Marjorie received her BA degree in music
from Wheaton college. I1L While there she
studied privately with Caroline Solfronk. first
flutist with the Chicago Women's Symphony
end was flute soloist with the Wheaton wo
men's glee club. . j
Last winter she enrolled at Juilliard and was
a pupil of Georges Barrere. in addition to pri
vate and class lessons with him, she was one
of a group of four who did jspecial quartet
end trio study with the teacher dt his home.
While in New York, Miss Broer was also di
rector of music and was 'organist at the Jud
on Memorial church.
Her sister. Kathleen Broer, won a fellowship
to the graduate school at Juilliard while study
ing with Edouard Hurlimann iri Portland. . She
was serving as concertmaster; of the Salem
Philharmonic orchestra under his direction at
the time.
'"'j With this1 fellowship,' she was . entitled to
sonata lessons . with Louis Persinger, theory
with Victoria Giammini, and to play with the
orchestra under the direction of Albert Stroes
el. During her first year there she studied
with Albert Spdulding. Last year she studied
with Ivan Galamian, celebrated French vio
linist ; ; - . - ; 1'
' She holds "a scholarship for next year at
fhe Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia,
of which Mr. Galamian is a faculty member.

Jeannette Scott daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Ralph Scott is another talented young musi
cian here for the summer vacationiwho will
appear with the orchestra. She is a former
concertmaster of the Salem Philhannonic and
for several years a member of the violin sec
tion of the orchestra.
' She .will - leave soon after the concert . to '
continue as teacher of violin In the Modesto
California schools. She will also work with
Frank Mandril, well known west coast school
band and orchestra leader, i
' : Miss Scott took her AB in music at" Willa
mette university : Where she studied violin
with William Wallace Graham. She then took
a BM degree dt Wisconsin conservatory of
music at Milwaukeei where she studied violin
with Pear Brice. She received her master of
music degree in music education at Univer
sity of Southern Galilomia where she studied
with Peter Meremblum. Later he- studied with
Carl Qaus at University of Idaho.
Miss : Scott started her teaching career " at
Tillamook as supervisorof music and served
in ths same capacity at Needles. Colli
