rarMzie tannery Workers
Vill Be Needed in Salem
Men willing to work during vacations or spare time in Marion
and Polk county canneries, as well as housewives and students
available for such seasonal employment need have no fear of being
"frozen" on their jobs by the "priority refehaT; program of the
war manpower commission, it was announced Thursday by the
SaJem canners' committee. '
j s Only workers employed full-time on a year-round basis are
required to obtain clearance from 1
lood processors before becoming
eligible for rehire by another em
ployer, it was stated after an in
terpretation of the point was se
cured from the local office of the
.United States employment service.
' "This means that housewives,'
students, part-time workers and
vacationists may work a day, six
weeks or until the peak of the
bean, pear, prune and peach sea
sons have been safely passed with
out being frozen to their supple
mentary jobs," said Dick Rent
fro, personnel manager of the Reid
Murdock company and chairman
of the Salem canners committee.
. Rentfro stressed that there is
no immediate need for cannery
workers In the area, but that ap
proximately 1200 men and 3200
" women will be needed during Au
gust and September in addition
to the crews already working. He
urged everyone available for even
one day to begin thinking about
devoting some time later in the
season to this vital wartime work.
I. "By August 15, hop picking un
questionably will drain - away
much manpower which -otherwise
might be available; for cannery
work, Rentfro painted out, "and
the seasonal peaks of such crops
as beans, pears, prunes and peach
es overlap about tlie time that
student workers return to their
classrooms in September, j There
fore, all of us should be, laying
plans to devote as much time as
possible to the processing of food
crops."
i The Salem j canners' committee
recently was organized ' to coor
dinate labor recruitment advertis
ing and publicity in the area. Be
sides Rentfro as chairman, other
members are Wayne Yocom, Blue
Lake Producers, and Elmore Hill,
Paulas Bros. Ex-officio members
are last year's committee, O. E.
Snyder, Blue Lake Producers;1 W.
B. Baker, Hunt Bros.; and Ralph
Steele, California Packing com
pany. . Persons available Lfor full or
part time work in the food proces
sing industry should register at
the canneries in Salem, West Sa
lem, Woodburn, Silvertoa, Stayton
and Liberty, or at the local USES
office. - i -

Some of us can remember the days when a drv-croods clerk would
measure ribbonby her arm's length (you got your money's worth when "
the clerk was long-armed!) nowadays, ribbon is measured by the

Ivan Iho pastry can be made on an easy aum
mer-time schedule! Here's a suggestion: make a
double batch of your favorite pastry recipe; put.
tins it together in the , "cool of the morning."
, What you don't use immediately can be left dry, j
or moistened and wrapped in waxed paper, before
placing it in the refrigerator. It's no more work
than making a single batch, and the next time
. . . . there's the pastry all ready to use for tarts
or turnovers or other fresh fruit delicacies!
Fresh frvtt pies are simple to make. Here's a
recipe for example, which can be used with
peaches, plums, cherries, rhubarb, berries, or a
combination of fruiter .
