Scrapbooks Furnish Veterans
With Many Hours of Pleasure
"This USO serapbook work is a grand project for any Salem
organization, young or old," says Mrs. Vern Ostrander, chairman
of the Salem USO serapbook committee and prominent worker
Jn veterans' and service organizations of the capital city.
The many compliments from veterans in hospitals are only a
portion of the "pay" for the genuinely-interesting work of putting
together the various types of
scrapbooks the USO has planned,
she maintains.
v Leaway is left for individual initia
tive and suggestions to simplify
the manual portions of the task
are provided with the books, de
Clares Mrs. Ostrander.
j Shej continues "One of the fine
things about our Salem serapbook
project is that you Jknow a large
number of the books which are
made up in Marion county are sent
directly to veterans in the Oregon
country, namely, in Barnes hos
pital near Portland, Camp Adair
hospital, where there are now
approximately 700 patients, in
eluding approximately 100 undr
treatment for malaria, and Klam
ath Falls where more than 5000
marines just returned 'from the
south teas are recovering in the
recently-iompleted ; hospital.
"Already-several hundred books
have been made up in Salem and
sent out. Many have been put
aboard ship and even sent to the
South i Pacific. They are read and
reread until they are mere shreds
of paper, we are told. What a
laugh our boys get!
"Our committee , wants more
local organizations such as lodges,
patriotic groups, Sunday school
classes. Girl Reserve, Girl Scouts
and church societies to aid us. The
blank books may be obtained from
the local USO, 693 Chemeketa
street, or representatives of organ
izations may call my home. We
make a charge of 15 cents a book.
having found that a little cash lay
out is a guaranty of quick return
and it makes the scraDbook fillers
conscious of the value of the ma
terial with which they are work
ing."
