Dr. Hill Directs Certification Job ' ' .:' . , I - By LILLIE L. MADSEN Certification is the foundation of Oregon's multi-million dollar seed industry, because without it the seed produced would be either unsalable or salable only at great discounts, Dr. D. D. Hill says. Dr Hill is head of the farm crops de partment at Oregon State college where certification work is di rected. ; ' -'j ;;j Oregon's seed certification pro gram for this year got under way in some sections the 'first week in July, marking!; more than 25 years of growth and development of this marketing! aid ! in Oregon. One of the earliest objectives of the certification program was to eliminate the serious losses in having a third of Oregon's , wheat crop graded as mixed wheat; with resultant ; discounts, Dr. Hille ported this week. After the j certi fication program started this per centage was steadily reduced to m , - i . s per, cent or less, wnere li nas remained ever since. Included now in the certification program are - all small grains, potatoes, hybrid seed corn, alfalfa, several kinds of clover, English ryegrass, all of the bent grasses and several others of the forage grasses. Prof. G. R. Hyslop who, until his death, worked steadily on this program, long ago foresaw the need of certification if - Oregon were ever to achieve an import ant, place in the seed production field.
