5 n i Cleanup Job Undertaken Comfort Stations Held , For Duration When j War Veteran Taken On SILVERTON Having served in World War I and wishing he were , a bit younger so he could serve ; in World War II, William Andres, Silverton special police officer, isn't 'afraid of taking on a "little extra when It cornea to work. Chief of Police Al Amo stated Thursday following a conference of City Manager Harry C. Mc Crea .and.; police. Officer Andres agreed to don city-purchased coveralls over his shiny new uni form and keep the city rest rooms clean. - p-. f For sometime now, the; public has reported the condition of the rest rooms "deplorable" and the city has been ashamed . to show Its visitors to its only public com fort stations. Until Mr.' Andres agreed to serve as "rest room cus todian" it looked as if they, might become just another war. casual ty and closed for the -duration. -Their condition, city officials ad mltted, "weren't exactly health ful." If and when additional help . can be obtained, Mr. Andres will be relieved of what he terms his bit of "dirty war work." I Efforts have been made to ob tain extra help for the city ever since Leonard Stroble, assistant water superintendent and super visor of the city sewage plant, was called to service in April. All city regulars including Water Superintendent T. L. Blust, Chief . Amo, Night Officer Victor Gross ndckle, Special Officer Andres and Street Commissioner Lewis Yates have been doing extra work. But when it came to cleaning the rest rooms,- there just seemed to be no one to do it, and complaints from i the public continued to pour in. "But Officer Andres can do it If he is willing, Chief Amo stated, adding that during the rush period when Commissioner Yates was ; doubling out on the Abiqua: water main work, Andres "without tell ing the world about it, got tip a little earlier and helped keep the streets clean for Commissioner .Yates." 1 rv-v J -i 1 Manager McCrea said he hadn't asked -the police to clean the streets but he had asked for help in the rest room situation. He ex pressed hope that the situation would be but temporary and that eventually suitable i help would be available so that everyone could settle down to his own par ticular work.1 Silverton Dentist Wins Promotion SILVERTON Maj.
