Oar prices are tops. 115 Center t Salem Mid Reports From Church Honors Lt. and Mrs. : Merritt Smith MILL CITY Members of the Presbyterian church honored 1st Lt. Merritt W. Smith and his bride of a few months at a re ception Monday evening at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Shroder. The evening was spent playing games and refreshments were served. A gift was presented to the couple. Lt Smith is the son of Mr. and Mrs. J. P, Smith and enlisted in the army air force in May, 1941. He received his commission as bombardier in October, 1942. He is now serving as instructor in Albuquerque, NM, at the bom bardier training headquarters. Lt Smith and his bride were married . March 18 at the army air base." They returned Wednes day. Cora Riddell Home Is Sold MONMOUTH Mrs. Cora Rid- deU of Eugene has sold her home here on corner of West Clay and College streets, to Mrs. C. J. De Armond of Independence. Mrs. Riddell, who formerly lived here, has recently returned irom a trip to Florida, where she went to help her daughter, Mrs. Richard Elkins drive her car back to Eugene, after Lt Elkins, in the signal corps, was sent overseas. The Riddell home has been oc cupied for about 5 years by Pres. C A. Howard, of O. C. E. and Mrs" Howard. , Miss Betty Lou Elliott of Port land, a former student and resi dent here, visited her grandfather, W. W. Elliott and local friends this week, while on a vacation. Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. D. Elliott now live .in Corvallis. She is employed In a defense office in Portland. ' W. J. Stockholm has returned from Grants Pass where he was a delegate from Monmouth grange to the State Grange sessions. He served while there on various com mittees. Stockholm has - been master of the local grange for many years. Braley Family Moving to D.C. ANGEL Joseph Wavra, outgoing director of the Mt An gel school board, was re-elected at the annual school meeting held in St Mary's school auditorium Mon day night Clem Butsch was again elected to serve as clerk. A good deal more interest in school affairs than in former years was shown by the townspeople as was evidenced by the greatly in creased attendance. Many . favor able comments were made about the improved school grounds. Robert '.Terbune, chairman of the school board, presided. The school budget was adopted, and it was also voted . to increase the amount of tax in excess of the 8 per cent limitation. Elmer Knight was ' the only nomination for di rector for a term of three years and was elected. : The name of Mrs. Marvin Hutchings was the only one placed in nomination for clerk for one year, and was elected. A motion carried making the salary of j the clerk $200 per year. The budget allowed only $100 salary. Guy Aupperle acted as judge; Mrs. Nettie Reeves and Mrs. -Er nest Powell as clerks. C. J. Thurston and Irvine Wright ar the? other members of the school-board. Ed Earl and family of Silverton have moved into the J. L. Jones house on North Second street; !re cently vacated by the Victor Ole man family. Mrs. Robert Wheeler and Mrs. William Bell bf Pendleton spent several days at the S. H. Coin home. They came to see their mother, Mrs. S. H. Goin, who is receiving treatment at the Salem Deaconess hospital. They left for Pendleton Monday, reporting their mother is improving. Mrs. E..JV Alexander suffered a slight stroke of . paralysis at her home last 1 Friday evening. It af fected her right hand, and also her vocal Cords, Mrs. Serepta Hampton, mother of Mrs. John Henderson,"who suf fered a slight stroke last .week, at Mrs. Fred Lemon's Nursing Home, Salem, is reported about the same. Mrs. A. H. Hennies Returns to Home . I i ' - - CLOVERDALE Mrs. A. H. Hennies was brought home last week from a McMinnville, hospi tal, where she had been a patient for ten days. Although still weak, she is feeling much better than she has for some time. Mr. andj Mrs. J. W. Schifferer and daughter, Dorothy Wilson, re turned home the first of last week from a trip to Roswell, NM, where they visited with their son, Jack, who is stationed there with the army air force. Both Mr. and Mrs. Schifferer enjoyed the trip but ex pressed a great relief in being back in the Willamette valley and away from' the Intense heat of the southwestern states. ANGEL One . hundred and twelve men attended the lay men's retreat held: at Mt Angel college the past weekend, an un usually fine attendance. The men came from all over the Willamette valley and Vancouver, Wash. Rev. -: John . Carvlln, CSP, . of Portland, district supervisor of the Paulist Fathers; and pastor of St Philip . Neri church, was the re treat master.-' " ! : The "first; conference began at 8:30 pra. Friday and the retreat closed Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock iwith a final ' conference and benediction. Clancy of Vancouver, Wash., who never missed a re jtreat here and would have at tended " the one just completed had he not- died about a month ago. of Laymen's Over Weekend An interesting feature of this year's retreat was the processional Way of the Cross Saturday after noon at the outdoor stations that are placed along a path that leads through the woods up to the top of the college hill and the ser vices at the Blessed Virgin grotto Saturday night All the men car ried ' lighted candles . as they marched the . distance of a b o u t three blocks from - the chapel to the grotto. Rev. James Koessler, dean of the college, conducted the station as well as the grotto ser vices. The retreatants were hous ed in the seminary building. Dates for the second retreat are August 18, 19 and 20. It will be conducted by Rev. Edward Spear, OSB. - . Picnic Supper Set Saturday HOPEWELL--A picnic supper Saturday, June 24, will be held at the Fred Bauer aquatic gardens picnic resort for . the Hopewell church membership and friends. There were 41 members - and friends attended the Father's day services held Sunday at the United Brethren church. Rev. Merril Fox brought the scripture lesson. There was special music and singing. Flowers were -presented . to the fathers. j There were 25. ladies attended the weekly all day meeting of the Ladies ' Aid. Mesdames Baker of Hopewell and Sims of Wheatland were complimented with a shower in the afternoon.. Refreshments were served. V
