, ' Shhhh: Worry not yourself sick over the Portland Beaver slump,
tame can go .only so far. And then (but don't tell the enemy) Manager
Marv Owen will spring his own secret weapon, in this case the death-to-tbe-enemy-dealer
personified by none other than L. H. Gregory
sporting" editor of the Oregonian . ; . Mebbe it was one of Greg's "spe
cial operatives" who told us this, and then again mebbe it wasn't
But we're given by oath to believe
that L. H. 5 "goes to the Vaughn
street park a couple times a week
with office lieutenant Al Stump,
sticks little Al. behind the dish.
and pitches to him -for an hour at
a clip". . . What's more, Greg has
' so much stuff on the ball that Al
vio has to soak -his hand in the ep-
som after every outing. His fast
lll is gone, naturally, but L. H.
has come up with "a good sinker"
and a "dead" ball which are said
to be unfathomable ... So any day
now, if the slump and Stump don't
wear out; the Liskas, Helsers, Pi
eretis, etc., are destined for the
sidelines . Could be that L. H.
was down in the bull-pen getting
ready for his debut the night of
that 17-2 atrocity we haven't yet been able to figure out how he,
as official scorer, let the Oaks take the field in the now famed "two
out inning." As official scorer it Mas his- job to at least count the
outs and had only to nudge the public addressor to get busy when
the overanxious Acorns took to pasture . . . But then when a ball
gamer is awaiting the big moment of his comeback anything's liable
to happen.' And when the home boys are that far behind a snooze is
pardonable, too ... If L. H. would save just a little of that 'pitching
energy to get reports 'of the Vaughn street results on the wire in time
at night alway the last one sent by far we might tell him where
he could learn how to throw the awesome "slider" pitch ...
Xlommissioned OSP Only One of Its Kind -
V About the" Oregon Mounted Posse which is to host three others
in the Third Annual Show sponsored by the Salem' Saddle club at the
Fairgrounds Saturday night and Sunday: According to Blanche Allen,
doing the publicity and programming for the show, thirty-three riders
. are now listed on the OMP roster, all headed by Posse Captain Lee
Eyerly.-The posse was originated in 1940 iiv connection with the Cen
tennial and now rates the handle "oldesfin the Northwest." It is also
the only known state commissioned posse, all members having been
commissioned by ihe governor. When Chas. A. Sprague was top man
in the state the posse was known as the Governor's Guard. All mem
bers own and keep up their own horses, too.
Add to the DiMaggios, Mizes, McCoskeys, etc., who are now show
ing in the Pacific theater what a major league ballgamer looks like
In action the name of Verne Olson, former lefthander with the Chicago
Cubs. Not because he's a southpaw or because he pitched for the
Cubs, but because he hails originally from Hillsboro. Olson joins the
list of Oregon-mcn-to-major-leagues which already boasts such lu
minaries as Joe Gordon (now a GI Joe), Bobby Doerr, Johnny Pesky
(recently commissioned ensign in naval air forces), Floyd "Bill" Be
vens (farmed by Yankees to Neward recently), Ed Coleman, Ford
' Mullen and Wes Schulmerich. Speaking of Wesley J, or "piano legs,"
now a naval lieutenant, he made sort of a comeback recently by
v playing with the Navy All-Stars in Honolulu as thousands of GI's and
natives watched "the greatest array of major league baseball talent
ever to appear on the islands." .
Bet if they, gave Wes a free hand with his "better 'n Al S-hacht"
antics, the spectators forgot all about the ball game.
They Put the ffhammy on Manager Marv
Speaking of the bodacious but recently bombasted Beavers, sup
pose you too have noticed the choice plum for Hatlo's "They'll Do It
Every Time." Two weeks ago ('BC before crash) when the per
fectly astounding Portlanders were a swashbuckling gang riding herd
over the Coast pack, Manager Marv Owen was nothing short of an-
i other John McGraw in the raw at least The Rose City writers dic
tionaried deeply to tell all what a marvelous job Marv in was doing.
Then, and practically belore the ink was dry on Manager Marv'a press
- notices, the "Brilliant Beavers" turned to "Plummeting Portlanders."
They've been slipping; and fast ever since. Which must make Man
ager Marv" sort ota Cinderella Malt in his own right .Either that or
Victim of a whammy which seems to rear its ugly self just every time
the word-slingers start pumping out. the copy on 'an overnight sports
hero.
But Dutch Reuther or not (he's the gent who forecast the Bevo
dive long before it started), our two-bits worth still says Owen and his
flustered flock are a better ball club than that Those proven hitters
aren't going to stay in that blanket slump forever, and the injuries
which have beridden no less than five would-be regulars can't hang
n all summer (we hope). Get 'em back into A-l shape, and the Port
landers still have the most experienced nine in the league as well as
one of the best balanced. .
; (To those who have doubted our ability to comb our hair Tuesday
morn yes, we did it. Wifey held the arm up and the rest was easy.)

Wagner Wins
Battle Royal
Gorgeous iGeorgie Wagner, the
mat heel they all want to see
thumped, last' night turned the
tables and won the as usual thrill
ing battle royal at the armory.
Meanefn ever and twice as nasty,
Georgie beati Herb j "Pinky" Parks
in the final land won himself the
$200 in war stamps put up by
matchmaker I Don ; Owen. Coast
Champion Paavo Katonen viewed
proceedings from a gallery seat,
as according; to plans Wagner is
now to meet the : curly headed
Finn. ! ;
The royal started out slowly but
gained momentum after Tex Ha-
ger left in 3:30. Tough Billy Mc
Euin was next in 5:50 and joined
Hager in the also-ran department.
Then black-hooded Mr. "X", mak
ing his debut,! was eliminated in
6:10, leaving Jack Lipscomb, Wag
ner and Parks. The latter two took
care of Lipscomb. The Indiana
meanie came back to grapple with
"X" in the semi final and finally
punched out the only fall for the
win. ' ! I
The Wagner-Parks mix was a
wild melee for the 30 minutes it
lasted, Georgie gaining the only
fall after squeezing an "uncle" out
of Parks in 21 minutes. Parks was
well on the way to evening things
when the time bell rang. Around
900 fans were in the seats to wit
ness the lively show.

freshman's victory. Dan Ferris,
secretary-treasurer of the AAU,
told reporters today that "I ex
pect Young's victory will be ques
tioned at the annual meeting this
winter. - v
"The rule book specifically says
the I starter is in absolute control
of the start. I have no doubt that
Young's victory or the entire
race for that matter will be ques
tioned and if it Is decided that
Sunday's contest was no race we
will have to ask return of the me-
aais ana nave Young's name
stricken from the books," Ferris
added. .Similar action was taken
following the 1912 Olympic games
at Stockholm when it developed
that Jim - Thorpe, Indian star of
the United States team, was
professional.
