led the stock market on a quiet re
covery swing today with favorites
adding fractions to a point or
more.
The Associated Press 60-stock
composite was up J3 of a point at
51. Breadth was lacking, tnly 848
issues appearing against 912 yes
terday. Transfers totaled 533,740
shares compared with 904,395
Wednesday. j
Further indications of large-
scale debut reduction by railroads
aided the carriers. Atlantic Refin
ing's first , quarter statement
cheered holders of petroleums and
this stock was ahead -17a. General
Motors' proposal to retire 784,406
common shares acquired in the
Yellow Truck & Coach Co. acqui
sition benefitted this leader.
Promient on the upside were
Union Pacific, Santa Fe, Great
Northern, Standard Oil (NJ),
Texas Co., Chrysler, Goodyear,
US Steel, Sears Roebuck, Oliver
Farm, United Aircraft, American
Airlines, International Telephone
and J. C. Penney.

Coming Slow
PORTLAND, April 20-ivGar-
den crops are coming up, slowly
and surely although rain has de
layed farming in some parts of
Oregon, the federal weather bu
reau said today.
The weekly; crop and weather
report indicated planting well un
derway, with most potatoes and
sugar beets already seeded. Fruit
trees were generally In bloom.
Some areas reported frost and hail
damage, and pollination retarded
by heavy rain.
Spring grain is growing Well, the
bureau said. Pasturage is good in
western Oregon and improving
east of the Cascades. Shearing is
underway.
Cold and rain prevailed through
last week, except in some south
ern areas. Union county recorded
snow flurries. The week's max
imum temperature was 60 at Ar
lington; the minimum 16 at Bend.

vival in private flour business
created moderate buying in wheat
futures today and the bread cere
al led a general advance on the
grain market Cash dealers re
ported sales of ; 10,000 bushels of
wheat out of this terminal to mill'

A large eastern chain baker
purchased 300,000 sacks of hard
winter and spring wheat flour, the
first substantial buying in more
than a month. Sales recently have
been confined to small lots for the
army with trade publications re
porting flour business at a near-
record low. ;:

unchanged at ceilings. Deferred
wheat contracts closed high

will leave here Monday, May 1,
for a 10 days inspection tour of
state properties in southern, east

ernor Earl Snell, State Treasurer
Leslie M. Scott and Secretary of
State Robert S. Farrell, Jr.
Two days will be spent in the
Jordan valley vicinity.
Revenues from the blocked
lands, many of which are under
lease to livestock producers, go
