- EXLVEKTON - Silverton rela
tives have learned that Fred Sears,
former high school teacher at Sil
verton, has been promoted to the
rank of lieutenant as personnel
director, BAAF, and that his loca
tion is at Bainbridge. Ga. Lt.
Sears Jeft the. local high school
lacultyi two " years ago, going to
Ontario, Calif, as physical direc
tor, and later to Miami, Fla., taking
an officer's training course.
- SILVKRTON Charles Me
wen' has received orders to re
port for service - in Portland on
January: 17. He was honorably
-discharged after four years of ser-
vice in the marines and has been
an the reserve list. He" is the son
of the Fred McEwens.-
SILVERTON Ffc Roy Ret
atad will return this week to his
army post, in : Texas after a few
days furlough at the home of his
brother, Milton Tbostrud at Sil
verton.
TURNER Aviation Cade
John ; S.' Schiff erer writes to his
friends from the army flying
school at Lemoore Calif 4 that
be likes the army air corps and
lores- to fly. , From 5:15 in the
morning L until 9:30 at night, the
program; is tight with as much as
5 minutes between formations. He
has had 24 hours leave-in the past
three weeks. His parents, Mr. and
Mrs. John W. Shifferer recently
visited him at Lemoore. Cadet
Schifferer, better known to his
friends as "Jack," is a graduate of
Turner high school and was em
ployed at ' Boeing Aircraft com
pany, before going into service.
TURNER WOlard Rolow, sea
man second class, who recently
spent a 15-day leave with his par
ents, Mr. and Mrs."" James Rolow
and his wife and baby, in Turner,
writes that he is now at Iowa
State college at Ames, Iowa at
tending a ; d i e s e 1 engineering
school. He completed his basic
training at Farragut, Idaho before
the leave, but reported back for
re-assignment. Mrs. Willard Ro
low and baby are visiting here
with her husband's parents.
KEIZER IA. Kenneth C. 13
wood and his wife, the former
Peggy Chamberlain of Quincy,
Wash., have returned to Rapid
City,-SD, after a brief visit with
his family on route 2. While here
Lt Elwood called on many of his
former teachers and friends.
Mr. and Mrs. Ellis Elwood,
route 2, have received word from
. their other two sons who are in
a a 9 mm n a
ine service, xne oiaesi son, jua-
en M. Elwood, has been in the
navy more than four years and
is somewhere in the south Pacific.
His wife, the former Anita Love
gren of Portland, is making her
home there while her husband is
at sea.
Tech. Sgt. Jack R. Elwood has
been In the army nearly three
years and has spent almost two
years in India. He recently re
covered from his second attack of
malaria and is able to be back
wth his squadron. The three -men
are graduates of the Salem high
school. . r
ZENA 8rt. Richard Plerson
visited his foster parents, Mr. and
Mrs.SiHoward Goodfellow while
enroute to visit his father-in-law,
Ed.Cudney at Bay Center, Wash.
Sgt. Pierson had been ill in the
Fort Orde hospital for 48 days
and has t two weeks furlough to
visit his family at Marshfield and
will stop here on his way back.

son arrived recently to visit his
parents, Mr. and Mrs. C O. John
son. He has completed basic train
ing and will report at Salt Lake
City to begin training In the army
ah corps.

USN, came from Bremerton to
visit his parents, Mr. and Mrs.
Elmer Johns. Miss Helen Henry
came from her home in Redmond
to visit with him while he was

ceived here yesterday, that Ray
mond F. Fisher, brother of Leon
ard Fisher, was promoted to the
rank of captain. He is serving with
the engineers division at Fort
Leonard Wood, Mo, and was for
merly a first lieutenant. He has
been' in the army., almost two
years.,
Capt. Fisher is a graduate of
ML Angel college and the fourth
local ' man to attain the rank of

class, has returned to the Farra
gut :, naval station after spending
a 15-day leave at his home here.
' Pfe, Arthar Todd Is at home
from Camp Polk, La, on a short
furlough, visiting his parents, Mr.
and Mrs. Ernest Todd of Jeffer

stationad now at Camp Hulem and
was formerly ; employed on the
Boulden farm and attended Day

here, now in military service, met
and spent Christmas together in
Los Angeles. They are Kenneth
Wait, Ray West and Donald Ham
ilton. . - :

from the US navy.

fell is stationed now at an army
post in Texas according to word

SILVER TON Lt. Harvey
Christensen, ' who is stationed in
the New Guinea area had received
but one of his Christmas pack
ages by Christmas, according to
word received by his parents. Mr.
and Mrs. George Christenson, this
week. He had moved around so
much of late, he wrote, that the
packages failed to catch up with
him. ' i ;
Another son of the Christen-
sens, John Christensen, has been
promoted from private to techni
cal corporal, the parents also
learned this week. CpL, Christen
sen is stationed at Camp Clai
bourne, La. ' Mrs. Christensen is
employed at the personnel office
at Camp Claiboume. She is the
former Dorothy . White, also of
Silverton.
SILVERTON Local relatives
have learned that Max Lindholm,
formeriy of : Silverton, has been
promoted to staff sergeant. He Is
with the marines in the New Gui
nea area.
SILVERTON Mr. and Mrs.
Tom Mcintosh this week received
a message from their son, Don
Mcintosh, petty officer, the first
message received in three months.
It stated that he was back in port
at Hawaii and that he had visited
with Bruce ; Dickman, son of Mr.
and Mrs. Arthur Dickman, also
Hugh Lock and Calvin Johnson
for an entire afternoon, but that
he would be gone before their
next leave. :

Bruce Taylor,5 35, of 934 North
Cottage street, Salem has been
advanced in rating from store
keeper firsf class, USNR, to chief
storekeeper (acting appointment)
the personnel officer of the con
struction battalion to which he is
attached announced.
Taylor enlisted in the Seabees
July 14, 1942, at the navy recruit
ing station in Portland, and has
been stationed here for 11 months.
Be was employed by the Oregon
state highway commission prior to
his enlistment
Edward Lambert, ten ef Mrs.
Marie Lambert of Salem, has been
promoted to the rank of sergeant
according to word received here.
He. is attached to the air transport
command at Miami, Fla.
Lyman D. Sondin. Jr Is attend
ing the army aviation gunnery
school at Sioux Falls, SD. His
