in 351 cases,; while the opposite

mostly for incidents occurring in

Other disclosures revealed in
figures made available at the first
aid station are that during 1943
there were treated: Fifty three
soldiers; 34 axe-cut victims; three
gunshot cases; sine injured Jn car
train. mishaps, three in pedestrian-
train, 19 pedestrian-auto, and 60
Involved in auto accidents. In 17
Instances victims of various acci
dents or illnesses were dead on
arrival. Among other things, 19
animal altercations were attended,
mainly between dogs. There were
five drownings.
A majority of the calls over the
year came between the hours of
12 noon and 64pjxl, with the per
. iod from midnight to t a.m. the
.. most slack. The first aid car in
; the 12 months stretch, traveled
3838 miles, while consuming, 400
gallons of gas. Eight tanks of oxy-
gen were used up.

Accepts Idaho
Swim Challenge
The national swimming pro
gram, which seeks the growth of
pool activities and individual de-
velopment has been directed to
the local YMCA in the form of a
challenge from the Kellogg, Ida
ho, association, and has- promptly
been accepted. The competition
will consist of a number of swim
ming tests, of which the local or
ganization Has already outlined fif
ty, and these tests will betatmlied
; according to ability; with the pool
reserved for instruction periods.
- Those; both boys and gitls, who
passed their December tests and
became full-fledged "Minnows"
- were Wayne Matti, William John
son, Gordon Garboden, Andrew
J. Chrystan, Bonnie Bell Stewart,
Jean Rowland, Loris Merriott, Lo
rita Garrett. L Verne Cammion,
Vivian Barham and Jean Barham.
Those becoming nxh" were: Jean
Rowland and Andy Chrystall; and
-Flying Fish"i Andy Chrystall.
The junior life saving class, in
. charge of Andy Chrystall and Jim
Tyron, expects' to complete" its
course by next Wednesday. ; "

In Pinball Suit

tax commission filed , appellants'
briefs in the .state supreme court
Thursday in suits filed by Sol Fox
and S. A. Sedlock, Portland, to
restrain the commission from col
lecting a tax levied on pinball
machines and "juke" boxes under
a law of the 1943 legislature, --.i
The tax on pinball machines was
fixed at $50 a year and on "Juke
boxes $10 a year. The Multnomah
county circuit court held the law
r unconstitutional, whereupon 1 the
- tax- commission appealed to the
supreme court - 4 - ;
At the time the Hax law was
approved by the legislature It was
"estimated that it would raise more
than $1,000,000 annually7 for old
age assistance. ; ' - ;
The two suits were combined
upon appeal.
