The Statesman, wrote recently to
his parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. F.
Underwood, West Salem. Pvt. Un
derwood, now in the marine corps
writes:
"It has been almost three
months since I last received a let
ter, which is explainable by the
fact that I have been traveling
again. We left New Caledonia,
went over to the "New Hebrides,
fooled around there awhile, and
then took off like a streak for that
little dot on the map called Ta
rawa. At first all we could see
was a lot of palm trees and a
cloud of smoke from naval shell
ing. As we neared the island we
couldn't imagine anything bad
was going to happen. It seemed as
if nothing could live through that
intense barrage. I guess people
can though, because a lot of wea
pons suddenly opened up on us
and right then I was really
thankful for those three inches of
steel around me. We blew up a
lot of installations' before we got
hit. My tank commander and I
were hit, but the tank kept run
ning and we pulled back. They
bandaged up my wound and sent
me to the ship. The scratch is
healed and I am ok.
"I've seen half the world, prac
tically, and if the rest of it is like
this, I'll never leave Oregon again.
