Sgt Mary McCall, above,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred
- McCall, route 2, will leave today
1 for Philadelphia, Pa, "where she
is a switchboard operator at ma
' rine headquarters. She has been
- spending her first furlough, a
. week, visiting her parents, rela-
fives at ML Angel, and friends.
Miss McCall followed the suit
' of her two brothers, CpL How
ard McCall and Pvt. Donald Mc
Call, both with the marines
overseas, when she enlisted last
March. She left in April for boot
, training at Hunter college, NY,
and received her sergeant's
rating when sent to Philadelphia
early in June. She was a tele
phone operator here before en-
. listing.
She likes the marines better
every day of service and thinks
Philadelphia is "grand." The city
itself always furnishes s o m e
thing to do, what with historic
spots to visit, but side trips to
the country have been limited by
even more stringent gas ration
ing than exists on the west coast,
Sgt. McCall reports. What she
saw of theK countryside while
passing through on the train was
. "very ..lovely juid quite similar to
Oregon. The climate was terri
ble, although nice at the time
she left Two Oregon girls are
stationed in her division also,
one from The Dalles with whom
she has become acquainted and
one from Tillamook whom she
has yet to meet.
The M c C a 1 1 s just received
word from Donald two days ago
that he had been sent overseas
and don't know yet where he is
stationed. He had been training
at Camp Pendleton, Calif. How
ard is in the South Pacific, at
present -at a rest camp in New
Zealand. He was in the Solo
mon Islands campaign.
Joining her three brothers in
the armed services, Miss Lela
Stanley, 695 South 19th street,
has enlisted in the WAVES,
women's service of the US navy,
it was reported here today by
. Chief Robert B. Fallon of the
Salem recruiting s u b s t a t ion,
which has charge of applications
for WAVES in this area.
Completion of Miss Stanley's
enlistment was at the Portland
branch, office of naval officer
procurement.
" : Miss Stanley will report soon
to the WAVES indoctrination
- school at Hunter college, Colum
bia university. New York city,
where she will begin the train
ing. On completion of this train
ing, she will be assigned to an
advanced school at One of the
nation's leading colleges for spe
cial instruction or will be -assigned
to active duty at a naval
station.' - ;. . '
Fourth member of her family,
to serve jn the armed forces is
Miss Stanley, joining her three
. brothers Arley Francis, private,
first class, army, now serving in
'Alaska;' Harry Cavendish, cor-
poral, army, now serving in Ha
waii, and George Winston, pri
vate, first class, army, reported
t missing in action in the Philip
pine campaign, ij -:
Miss Stanley attended Yakima
high school and since May has'.
; been a saleswoman with Acum
Bootery, Salem. Previously she
" was a saleswoman with Mont-
gomery Ward.& company, Sa
