Schlesinger of Salem. He reports
that he is enjoying his work and
hopes to return home on furlough
arly in September, his first visit
here in 14 months. His wife,. Al
ljne, will come north from Los
Angeles to be with him here dur
ing the furlough. -
" David Bales, second class sea
man in the US naval amphibian
forces, writes Hunt Clark, States
man circulation manager, for
whom Bales worked when he was
a carrier here, that he is at pres
ent stationed at Port Hueneme,
Calif. David is the son of Mr. and
Mrs. Paul D. Bales of 1868 Court

Dayton Lt and Mrs. Edgar
Hole of Idaho came Wednesday
for a short visit with their parents,
Mrs. Frank Hole and Mr. and Mrs.
Ben Roth at Dayton, during the
lieutenant's furlough.
Robert ITKen left Thursday
- morning for duty after spending
a month's furlough with his moth
er, Mrs. W. S. ITRen, following
the death of his father early in
July. Young ITRen has been in
the south Pacific war zone.
ABIQUA Earl McKillop has
returned to his home here with
an SD discharge and will be sent
to a hospital for treatment
Delbert Stalger has left for army

On Crew of
Missing Sub
Official announcement that the
submarine USS Pickerel Is miss
ing, released this week by the
navy, makes it permissible to re
veal that Merrill Gragg VanCleve,
24, . torpedoman second class,
whose wif e : lives at 2054 North
Church street was . a member of
the Pickerel's crew.! She received
a telegram June 4 stating that her
husband was missing. . ,
This was the second submarine
on which VanCleve had served
since enlisting in the navy June
10, 1939. He was on the Pickerel
at Manila at the time of the first
bombing there, ) and during the
subsequent retreat down the coast
of Asia until the fleet reached
Australia. ' ' t" ,
About a year ago the submarine
returned to a west coast port for
overhauling and at that time Mer
rill came -home on. leave and was
married to Miss . Alice Tucker.
They lived In Berkeley, Calif., un
til January 1,? 1943, when he re-r
turned to active duty. , -:;... ,:y
Merrill VanCleve was born
March 4, 1919, at Coquille, Ore,
but spent most of his life in Salem
and vicinity. He was a graduate
of Aumsville high school, where
he was an honor student, and at
tended Willamette university be
fore his enlistment His parents,
Mr and Mrs. J. B. VanCleve, re
side at' Aumsville and his grand
mother, i MrsJ Beatrice ' Merrill,
lives at 110 Ratcliff drive, Salem:

Mrs. Ella J. Lee, 87, are to beheld
at the Baptist church In Scio at 2
pjn. Saturday, the Rev. V. I
Loucks to ' officiate. The Howe
mortuary of Lebanon will have

Mrs. Lee died at .the farm home
near Scio .Wednesday afternoon
She was born in Iowa - but had
lived ; in the Scio community 41
years. Her husband, W.,. T. Leej
preceded her in death last March.

Survivors -include two daugh
ters and four sons: Mrs. E. L. Bil
