Favorites Lose From
" 1 to 2 Points, Others
Descent Farther
, NEW YORK, June 14r-r-The
tock market ron into one of. Its
sharpest sell-offs of the year Mon
day ; with manyi recent rail and
heavy industry favorites losing 1
to 2 points and a few isolated is
sues conceding 5 or so.
There was little in the spot news
to account for - the tumble and
brokers inclined to put the blame
partly on expectations the presi
dent would send a special message
to congress outlining new drastic
anti-inflation policies. Armament
rated stocks, paced by carriers and
steels, were 5 the first to retreat,
good war developments apparently
having some effect here. Peace is
sues, however, also slipped but
more reluctantly than others.
Those with large-sized profits
on the big recovery swing of the
past six months to new, tops, since
late 1939 were disposed to cash in
, oil the theory a technical reversal.
If only temporary, was a likeli
hood. ;; . , ' " 7 '."
' The list -maintained a fairly
steady course until after mid-day
f when a deluge of liquidating or
ders hit the floor and quotations
in virtually all departments weak
ened. The pace then slowed and
extreme set-backs were reduced in
inost cases at the close.
The Asocia ted Press 60-stock
average was off .9 of a point at
60.3, widest drop for any session
since April 9. Transfers totalled
" 1,352,100 shares against ""-840,510
Friday. The market was a broad
one, 959 individual stocks being
traded. Of these, 794 were down,
102 up and 103 unchanged.
Conspicuous losers included
Santa Fe, NY Central, Southern
Pacific, Great Northern, Southern
Railway, Northern Pacific, US
Steel, Bethlehem, Chrysler, Gener
al Motors, US Rubber, Sears Roe
buck, International Harvester,
United Aircraft, S perry, Interna

Grain Prices
Drop Sharply
Liquidation, Lack t
Of Buying Power
Causes Decline
CHICAGO, June Light
but persistent liquidation, coupled
with a sharp drying-up of buying
power Monday dropped all grain
prices more than a cent. The mar
ket showed no tendency to rally
and at the close quotations were
on the day's lows. '
There -was not specific news up
on which the selling might be
blamed, but grain men were im
pressed with fairly heavy arriv
als of wheat at Kansas City and
Minneapolis. Hedging pressure, al
though never . very large, was : a
factor sending wheat 'nto lower
territory. Rye and oats encoun
tered profit-taking.
At the close wheat was
lower, July $1.44-01.44, Septem
ber S1.441S-$1.44, corn was un
changed, July $1.05, oats were off
l'B-lH and rye was down 1
1. The harvesting area In " the
southwest is expanding, : traders
said, and there is considerable
question concerning how much
wheat . wilL go' into the loan and
how much will be marketed. A
tight railroad box car situation is
another factor causing uncertainty.
All grains continue to be used
extensively, visible supply figures
showed. Duringthe past week
visible supply of wheat dropped
4,582,000 bushels,, corn 3,444,000
bushels, oats 1,167,000 bushels, rye
334,000 bushels and barley 213,000
bushels. Total visible supply of
wheat, corn, rye and barley is low
er than last year, but oats is high
