Sewer liriprcrvement
J.;IANON-Two electious "will
be held in Lebanon - w 1 1 h I n I a
wTha first one, May : 2L .Is
calledby tha'city council Jto de
termine de attitude of the prop
erty owners on the matter of im
proving the city sewer system.
-The second election," May 27, is
the school election of district 18
when it will be proposed that SSt
000 additional tax be levied .to
allow; for increased costs' of main
tenance as well as .for higher, sal
aries -for teachers.. . ...
The special election called for
May 21 by the city council is the
result- of, a petition presented to
the council ' asking ; that immedi
ate steps be taken to improve the
sewerj system which was laid out
when; the city was a third 'of its
present size and which had little
provision made for extension.
The; city's problem is compli
cated by the fact that Lebanon is
built on . bottom land anct that
makes it difficult to get slope
enough for adequate drainage.
Some breaks. have. been made in
the pipes which allows the -surface
water to seep out This cau
ses manholes to fill and. the. back
pressure of slow drainage results
in flooded streets and basements.
The ' Council has bad for some
weeks a committee' of which L. E.
Arnold is chairman, studying the
problem. A consulting engineer
has been employed but no defin
ite plan has been made. The el
ection Is designed to obtain voters'
opinion about a special tax Over
a- five year, period to provide a
sinking fund for whatever con
struction may be necessary - to
correct the trouble. .
