'f i Coal Truce Boosts Stocks AP Average Up .6 At 50.2; New High Since April, 1940 NEW YORK, May 3-iJPf-Buy-Injg power returned to the stock market Monday, in the wake of the coal labor truce, and a wide assortment of favorites pushed up fractions to more than a point, many to peaks for 1 to 3 years. There were scattered jumps of 2 to 3 points. Advancing trends appeared at the opening but the move soon was stemmed by profit cashing. Bid ding expanded later, however, and most issues closed at or near the day's topsi It was the fastest ses sion in nearly a month as low priced performers turned over in blocks of i 1000 to 10,000 shares. Steels and! stocks ot other compa nies which would have been hit by fuel shortage were in front throughout ' Wall Street felt that the end ing of the huge government bond drive, which exceeded its original quota at about $17 billion, would bring further idle funds into cor porate securities and some of the day's purchasing was based on this Idea. The war news, earnings statements and dividends were factors in the rise. ; The Associated Press average of 60 stocks was up .6 of a point at 50.2, a new top since April 25, 1840. It was the largest day's ex pansion for this barometer since . March 29. The market also was one of the broadest for the year to date. 952 individual issues be ing traded. Of these 630 were up, 142 down and 180 unchanged. Transfers of 2,349090 shares com pared with 1,358,890 last Friday and were the best since April 9. Gray Funeral Set Wednesday SILVERTON Funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon at the Marquam Methodist church at 2 o'clock for Mrs. Rhoda .Ann Gray, 89 years old; with Larson & Son of Silverton in charge. Mrs. Gray was born at Mar quam and had lived there prac tically her entire life. She died . there Sunday night. Survivors are three daughters, Mrs. Minnie Jack and Mrs. Verda Jones of Marquam; Mrs. Clara . Beel Sprague of San Francisco; two sons. Warren Gray of Marion and Roy of San Francisco; 12 grandchildren, eight great grand children and one great great grandchild. Mrs. McMami8 Buried Monilay WALDO HILLS Funeral serv ices were held Monday at 2 p.m. ' for Mrs. Ida G. McManus, 77, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. R. M. Morton and interment was at Mt. Hope cemetery. Rev. Stover of Salem conducted the services with the Ekman Mortuary in charge. Mrs. McManus, who was born in Marion county February 10, 1866, and died Sunday at her daughter's home. She had made her home there for the past eight years. ' Survivors, besides Mrs. Morton, are two brothers. Earl Pooler of Salem, and Ivan Pooler of Joseph; a sister, Mrs., Effie Back of Salem and grandson, Robert Morton, who has' made his home in Hawaii for a number of years. Wheat followed, close behind rye, but oats tended to lag and finished with only slight changes. Corn held at ceilings. May 3. . . . ; Eastern houses bought rye and covering, by local, traders aided the advance.
