Wesley P. Schulmerich, who formerly was an outfielder with the Phils, Boston Braves, Cincinnati, Los Angeles Angels, Toronto, Portland Beavers, Lewiston; Bellingham. Twin Falls and Spokane," so says the Sporting News of this week. Don't know about that "Wes ley P." stuff, but the Schul-, merich, is the same piano-legHf ged, boot-nosed hombre. who has that nice fishing and hunt ing lodge over at Beaver and used his bulk as . quite a bat tering ram for Oregon State's tleven not too many years ago. In fact when Al Schacht, baseball's professional funniest man showed In Twin Falls he drew less, fans than did Schnlmerich, and those who did come kept bellering, "We want Schulmerich;' Twin Falls wasn't the only to nobody in this baseball funny business. So if the navy doesn't already know it, a lot of belly laughs for the salty gobs could easily bo had if Wesley P. were given a diamond. Navy Due for Changes J enne Style Lt. Hoop Frolics i End Up With : Two Wins Each Willamette's unpredlc table hoop-'Cats at least when they play Portland gave a flossy ex hibition in the second half of their game against the Pilots last night and took a 53-45 win to even up the annual "Little Civil War" se ries at ; two wins for each team. The tussle also closed the cur tain on, Willamette's home season. Only one more game Wednesday night at Linfield remains on the Bearcat schedule.: - As usual, whenever the Pilots and Bearcats ret together,, last night's' game did not want for action. Only this time is was considerably on the clean aide. Coach Matty Mathews two aco point pitchers, Paul OToole and Del . nantslnger, were in the groove the first half, and largely due to those two the Pilots led throughout the period and 26-20 at . half time. Bat Wes ! Saxton and Irv Miller took ever the groove in the second period and while OToole and Huntsinger eooled off the Bearcat pair rave the big push which finally shov ed Willamette into the lead. Coach Spec Keene's clan i was behind the whole first half,' but the 26-20 halftime count was only as far as the Pilots could get ahead at any . one time during the period. Both quints were breaking up court with terrific speed and worked the ball in for points after well executed scoring plays. ; Willamette came to within 19-18 with three minutes left, bat free pitches by Hantslnger, OToole and Cullen, pins two driving lay-Ins by Hantslnger rave the Pilots their rest stop advantage. Pat White, back in harness again, looped a long one for Willamette's only points the final three minutes. Butch Roison made it 28-20 for Portland at the outset of the final period with a long two-hander, but a 1-2-3 punch by Gene Schmidt, Bob Perry and then Schmidt again closed the gap. Bruning tipped one in before Per ry meshed a long set shot, then after Cullen and Vaughn exchang ed free tosses Perry swished a difficult follow-in shot to finally tie it at 31-31. - With 14 minutes left Miller canned two straight long ones and the Methodists were away, and from there on they kept the lead. With half the period rone the . Keenemen were oat front, 40-34, as both OToole and Hantslnger slumped. Keene was forced to insert three reserves to play out the last five minutes as Saxton, Schmidt and Miller all went out via the foul route. Huntsinger bowed out the same way near the end of the game. Despite their slump the Port land dunking duo Huntsinger and OToole managed to can 16 points each to take honors in that department. Saxton's 13 led the 'Cats and was closely followed by Miller's dozen. Willamette outshot the Pilots, by far, casting off 71 times and connecting with 24 field goals. Portland shot only 60 times and gathered 16 goals. Thirteen good foul tries by the Pilots offset the 'Cat bulge in field goals some what. Noticeably missing from the fray was the usual rock-'em sock- em stuff expected in any Portland Willamette session. Both teams drove hard and fought Just as bard for the ball at times, but no down-and-out flagrant , rough stuff took place. However, there were no kind words or pats on the back Jor opposing players. either.
