902,842.58 the previous 12 months.
Gross sales for the year ended
June 30, 1942, aggregated $13,-
924,844.69, as against $10,329,
657.10 the previous year. The net
profit was 30.53 per cent based
on gross sales.
The law enforcement division
reported 39,339 investigations.
The increase in liquor sales was
attributed to improved business
conditions due to war industries.
No recommendations were con
tained in the annual report.
The law provides that all net
profits of the liquor control com
mission, over and above working
capital, shall be transferred to
the publie.assistance fund.

known and oldest state employe
in both age and length of service,
died at Salem General hospital
Tuesday,' following an illness of
several weeks.
He was a native of Boston, son
of Capt J. G. Lovell, a noted
shipbuilder and owner of a large ,
wharf in Boston harbor. His mo
ther's family came to America in
1624" and his father's in 1630.
Lovell was born in 1852 and at
the age of 20 years, came to Ore
gon via the isthmus, to join his
brother, CoL S. S. Lovell, a ranch
owner in Nehalem valley. After
three years there, he , located at
Westport, where he taught school
and later was engaged in the
lumber business. He also served
as .purser on a Columbia river
boat.
Upon coming to Salem,' Lovell
was employed in the state depart
ment under Secretary of State
Georg W. McBride. He was also
state tax commissioner for ' part
of one term and worked in the
office of the state insurance com
missioner for a few months. His
service for the state covered a
period of 50 years. 1
Lovell was employed in the
state department under eight sec
retaries of state other than Mc
Bride. When he came to Salem,
there were only four employes
in the state department; there are :
now over a hundred.
Friends of Lovell said he was
a close personal friend of Sylves
ter Pennoyer, early Oregon gov
ernor. His wife, who died in
1915, was Lillian Stutesman of
Salem. Lovell was a lifelong
member of the republican party.
