Darnley was posing upon an
improvised model's stand. She
-thought she had never been so
tired in her life. Her back ached;
. her neck burned; 'her knees
trembled; She did not know how
long she had .been standing
there, and Peter Orrick had . for
gotten, in his concentration. Had
she been a . professional model
she would have demanded a rest
long before this,, but, in her ig
norance,1 she believed this was
the way models had to do. .
In the beginning she had been
embarrassed. But Peter Orrick
scowled at her, his head on one
side, and nodded his head. "Up
there,"..', be said peremptorily,
pointing to the stand. "Just stand
a second while I think."
He stood' back and stared at
her, and her embarrassment de
parted. Orrick was not seeing
Darnley Carfax; he was seeing a
hundred and ten pounds of beau
ty that was nameless and sex
less. He strode to her. He moved
her about! as he would have
moved a bit of bric-a-brac on his
plana After ten minutes he was
satisfied. "There, hold it!" he
said, and seated himself at his
easel. - :'-:
: i For five minutes, ten minutes,
it was pleasant. The novelty of
it, the adventure of it, entertain
ed her. Then she began to dis
cover joints and muscles. Her
head commenced to whirl and
she found difficulty in keeping
her balance.
