22,000 Forms
Sent Out for
Gas Rations
Twenty two thousand of the
forms which the county's motor
- ists will use In connection- with
- toe nationwide ' mileagle ration-
mg were received by the war
price and rationing board here
Friday and were, in turn, started
on their way to applicants through
major oil companies.
- Most of , the blanks will be
turned over to service stations,
. where gasoline users may secure
them, John Vaaghiv executive
secretary of the board here, said.
A few will be retained andLheld at
schools where registration for the
rations is to be handled Novem
ber 9, 10 and 11 from 4 to 10 p.m.
Motorists should obtain and fill
out the blanks before registration
days to facilitate the work of the
volunteer registrars, recruited
from teaching staffs over the
county, Vaughn declared.
- 'The basic "A" and "D" mileage
ration cards are to be distributed
to' applicants at the time of regis
tration. The "A" cards go to
drivers of automobiles, the "D"
, cards to motorcyclists. Persons
seeking more than the basic ra
tion will do so at the time of reg
istration. L "
The information needed, except
'for the tire seria numbers, is to
be found on the car owner's reg-
istration card.
s The applicant will find space
for listing his tire serial numbers
. on the back of the form.
On the tire inspection record,
which is separated from the gas
; ration application form by a per
forated line, the applicant again
writes down his tire serial num
bers, and certifies that these num-vj
bers are the same as those listed
in the other part of the form.
The tire inspection record will
be torn from the application form
when the applicant registers. It
-contains space for the tire inspec
' tor to- make his report following
each inspection of the tires.

War Effort
Advertising 1:
Described
Advertising Is a means of com
munication and as such is being
utilized to promote the .war effort,
Larry Lane, president of the Paci
fic Advertising association, told
members of the Salem Advertis
ing and Sales club Friday. .
The advertising field has been
utilized to the fullest in the sale
of war bonds, the' scrap salvage
campaign,' ceiling price fixing and
other war efforts, Lane said. In
the scrap campaign the steel in
dustry took over thef financing
of the advertising- since it needs
the scrap and will benefit from
its collection.
The US government has paid for
no advertisements, Lane said he
had been reliably informed, ex
cept army and navy recruiting
program. , Business men have been
working side by side with the
officials', in Washington and re
spect for business men Jus grown
out of this close cooperation.
Charles W. Collier, executive
secretary "of the association, spoke
to club members on .the plans
which the association is prepared
to furnish members for local co
operation with the war effort,
Lane is editor and publisher of
the Sunset -magazine.

Four Diphtheria
Cases Reported ;
In County, Week "
Four cases of diphtheria report
ed last week from Marion county
do not represent an epidemic, and
immediate sources of the disease
are known, members of the coun
ty health department staff "said
this week. All known cases in the
county have been isolated and
danger of spread is slight, but
immunization of children should
not be neglected, it was declared.
tOne of the children, "numbered
among the four, was from a fam
ily in which others had received
Immunization treatment, but, the
others were from families where
immunization had either not been
made available or had been re
fused, it was said.
With the current influx of pop
ulation, from areas where immu
nization is not readily available,
danger of spreaoTordiphtteria-or
similar diseases is greatly in
creased, the spokesman for the
department declared, pointing out
that school children -may secure
the treatment at Saturday morn
ing clinics- at the department of
fices in the Masonic building. '

Rural Scrap
Pile Here
100 Tons
Salem's rural scrap pile at the
Portland Gas it Coke company
plant on Chemeketa street mount
ed to 100 tons Friday, County
Agent Robert Rieder believed.
Actual weights of contributions
had totaled more than 90 tons
on Thursday, Rieder said," and
Pringle's contributions later
Thursday and ' Friday j Together
with v. other cleanup j campaigns
raised it well over 10 tons.
; : Still to come ? from Keizer
heavy collections are several trac
tors and old cars and trucks, while
a.- portion of the Silverton . road
collections h v e not" yet rbeen
made, and other communities are
preparing; for scheduled pickups.
;I Meanwhile, no bid had yet been
accepted by the war, chest com
mittee on scrap sale, and ' In the
quality of the rural contributions
to the campaign was 'foreseen a
possible bait for higher prices than
any offered to date.
