Satan. Oregon, Thursday

Salem's younger athletes are probably disappointed no end
gince their annual "civil wars" have been taken from them .for
the duration, but if they only knew it the whole shift means a
line, break for all the kids who like football, basketball, baseball
and track at both Leslie and Parrish.
. In the past only a select group formed the nucleus for the
football team in the fall, the basketball team in the winter and
the baseball and track teams in the spring. In fact a good two-
thirds of respective Leslie and
Parrish athletic squads were four
gtar lettennen, winding , up one
sport and starting right in on the
next Which meant that the littler
fellows sat in the background with
the desire to play, but couldn't
'cause the big guys were taking
over. -
Vnder the new set-up ALL the
athletic minded youths of both in
stitutions, as well as those in" the
senior high, will be giveh a golden
opportunity to participate in all
sports, regardless of size, as the
new program stresses indulgence
by every boy in the schools, and
will be arranged so that all will
be afforded a chance toward de
velopment. JVenr Head Coaches
As was hinted before, the
Blg Three" of the junior highs
will undoubtedly wind up the
Bit Three" of the senior high
before long. Nothing has been
nude public yet by the school
board, but it appears Vik foot
ball destinies in the coming
season will be guided by Tom
my Drynan and basketball by
Frank Brown. Gurnee Flesher
has already been moved up to
Gloomy Gus" Gilmore's head
man spot If Drynan and Brown
do advance to the 14th and D
Institution, there's the question
will all three serve only for
the duration until Lieutenants
Gilmore and Harold Hauk re
turn? Chances are the war It
self will answer that one.
Don't Give Up Yet
Speaking of advances, move-ups
and the likes, if the town Senator
twirlers can hold their own from
here in, despite all the woes
which have befallen our 25th and
Turner roadsters, they're still
what could be called (?) a fairly
potent outfit-True .they have no
manpower, but the regulars of to
day are lashing along at a .289
clip for team batting, and a cou
ple of the boys are becoming more
and more dangerous with the wil
low. Of course Skeets O'Connell
wOl have to do some tall stroking-
to keep up his- .400 average,
. bat Sam Taormlna and Phil
Salstrom have been gaining
. steadily, and it wouldn't be im
: possible- for Sam to keep right
on 'going to the top. Ton know
he was leading the California,
loop with a .375 average when
It did the el foldo. '
Lefty Jack Richards is still well
up in there with his percentage,
. and Alf Cailteaux, Manager Pete
and Curly Leininger are clipping
along steadily in the .270s.
If the lineup can maintain that
Tate with the willow and the
mound crew can throttle the op
position, our Legislators won't be
to disgraceful after all.
Incidentally, all Manager
Pete need do now Is play the
shortstop and third base slots
and he will have been in every
position on the team and not
Jnst for fun either. That's one
for the books.
Grounders & Pickups
An odd thing all four VVIL
clubs have lost money this sea
son, but all four have made a
, few thousand dollars possible
for various war reliefs and ben
efits. Which proves baseball
even In class B can do Its share.
And Salem will help throw in
another wad with the city un
ions as a result of "Union La
bor Night" on August 81 ... .
Yes, that's the same Bill Beard
back In there catching for Se

long as he's passed his Induc

According to McNulty, the men
