Mrs. Black told of the local ac tivities of the juniors to include a visit of the president-elect, Miss xxeva .trice,-10 me iraaen nome to welcome the three young peo ple who recently returned from - six years spent in Norway; of the juniors collecting books and ma gazines for the Camp Adair sol diers; of Leah Ann Hutton selling more than $16 worth of tags for the stretcher campaign, Saturday, and that the young women would continue gathering magazines for the soldier groups. Membership reported by Mrs. Glenn Price showed 15 paid up for the 1943 enrollment. A 6:30 supper will be at the city park the second meeting in Aug ' ust in compliment to the Sons of Legion and the Juniors with all members of the families of post and unit groups welcome to at tend. The regular meeting will follow the supper. Aurora unit will entertain the , Marion county assembly at the ' August meeting, the exact date to : be decided later. No annual meet ing at the city park will be held this year for the Marion county veterans' association as has been the custom in the past, on account of existing conditions. A social hour with refreshments served was enjoyed with the le gion following the separate meet ings of the post and unit. SILVERTON Glenn Price, commander, announced at Mon day night's meeting of Delbert Reeves post No. 7, American Le gion that officers would be in stalled the evening of Tuesday following Labor day and an ef fort was being made to have the recently elected commander of district 2,- Otto Heider of Sher wood, as installing officer. Arthur Gottenberg, commander-elect, announced a successful phonograph record collection campaign and gave a report of the highlights of the state convention at Portland. Gottenberg named his auditing committee to include Clifton Dickerson, J. J. Lewis and Frank M. Powell. The post -will meet with the members of their families in hon or of the Sons of Legion and the Junior Girls, August 17, in a no- host supper at the Silverton city park. - Girl Helping With Harvest 15 Year Old High School Student Drives Tractor, Works on Combine INDEPENDENCE Barbara Wells, 15-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Wells, is doing her part in the harvesting on her father's farm this year Earlier in the season she spent many hours driving the tractor and now that harvest has started. she is sewing sacks on the com bine. This work will last, for six weeks. Barbara isa-student at Independence high school. Mr. andMrs." K. L. Williams have sold their hop ranch to Har old Withrow from the cantonment area. Withrow will take posses sion by August 15. Eunice Fuhr will leave in Sep tember for Portland where she will enter hospital training. Juanita Moe plans to return to Parkland, Wash., for her second year of college at Pacific Luther an, and her cousin, Miss Joan Sa tem will accompany her to begin her first year. Mrs. Helen M. Mrs. Dolph Ayres Funeral Tuesday LEBANON Funeral services for Mrs. Dolph Ayres, 66, who died Saturday, were held Tuesday afternoon from the Lowe Mortu ary. Burial was in the Masonic cemetery. Rev. Leroy Crossley of the Baptist church officiated. Mrs. Ayres was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Edward Myers and a sister ot Chester My ers. Of ficers for the past year were Bill Smith, president; Emerson. Yoder, secretary-treasurer; Ellen Lind holm, historian. New officers cho sen were L. B.' Yoder, president; Mrs. James Warreck, secretary treasurer; Mrs. George Chisten son, historian. The historian reported one death, three marriages and seven births in the clan during the year. The death was that of Lee Yoder, the last member of the older gen eration. He died last September at the age of 93. Births were a daughter, Judy Evelyn to Mr. and Mrs. George Crump on September 12; a daugh ter, Peggy Marie to Mr. and Mrs. Donald Christenson, September 27 and a son, Keith Hugh, to Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Cottwald on Oc tober 22; a. daughter, Kathleen Rose, to Mr. and Mrs. Nelan Yo der, January 28; a son, Phillip Jesse to Mr. and Mrs. Jack Hein, February 25; a son, Robert Ray to Mr. and Mrs. Claude Yoder, exact date unknown. The motion which called for the only dissenting vote of the evening referred to the applica - tion of the Safeway store for a class B package liquor license. J. W. Jordan made the motion that the application be refused, ex plaining that he thought it better to keep the sale of liquors in stores provided for this and not bring it into local grocery stores. E. L." Starr, seconded the motion and when the vote was called L. F. Tucker, R. A. Fish and L. E. Brown voted against the motion. A. L. Coote, the sixth councilman, was absent. Jordan made a second motion calling for the application to be laid on the table for further consideration. This brought a una nimous vote of the five council men. The council also voted to ask local insurance agents to submit policies fully made out and ready for purchase by August 10. At this time the city council will select the policy best suited to city needs. Two ordinances were read, Or dinance 330, pertaining to segre gation of street assessments on South Water and Cowing, was read on its third and final read ing, while Ordinance 331, which will establish a city planning commission, one of whose main duties will be zoning of the city, was passed upon its second read ing. Chief of Police A. Amo report ed that the caretaker, Oscar Blakely, at the city swimming pool had, in lieu of a telephone at the pool, had to come to town to call assistance in the case of bottle throwing into the pool. The council members point ed out that Mr. Blakely was him self deputized and could make ar- Priorities Stops Repair of Bridge LEBANON The bridge across the canal, on South Second street has been closed and will probably have to remain closed indefinitely because of priorities. As the bridge is not essential to orderly travel to that part of town, the council has been informed that lumber for its rebuilding may not be had for some time. The bridge has been closed to trucks for several months.
