Slot Machines
Thought Fewer
Supt Charles P. Pray of the
Oregon state police-expressed the
belief Friday that few slot ma
chines were now operating in the
state.
Pray said he had instructed his
men that the recent drive -against
slot machines, Inspired as to army
camp areas by Lt. Gen. John L.
DeWitt, western defense com
mander, -and spread over all the
state by Gov. Sprague, should be
no momentary move but a con tin
uing program.
"The demoralizing effects of
these devices -are not confined to
the vicinity of barracks and en
acmpments, but extend to any
point in the state through which
soldiers may travel or where they
remain on leave," Pray .wrote.

Holiday Vacation
Burning of second mortgage on
the church property, highlighted a
celebration .i at Calvary Baptist
church Friday night The loan, j
made by the Baptist Home Mis
sion society in "If 38, was for a
period of six years, but. since
many ; members of the church
adopted the; tithing plan, the
church financial condition has
been' placed in a splendid condi
tion, making possible the paying,
off of 'this indebtedness two years
before maturity of loan.
. Of particular ; interest to the
congregation were extracts from
the dairy, of Mrs. W. F. Foster,
who was one of the charter mem
bers when the church was organ'
ized in 1928. In her diary Mrs.
Foster made reference to many of
the charter merAbers who" are not
herev but whose names were viv
id in the minds of. many.
-Addresses were made by-a cos
mopolitan group from the congre
gation, doctors, educators, house
wives, laborers, students, business
men, and Barbara Jean Taylor,
U years, got rousing applause
when she responded with a spir
ited talk on behalf of the little
folks.
Letters of congratulation were
read from the former pastor, Ttev.
A.-Q. Weniger, and the Home Mis
sion society. The Home Mission
society said: "The loan to your
church is one of those that was
exceptionally well handled.'
Calvary Baptist church was or
ganized in 1928 with a charter
membership of about 200. Rev.
W. E. Cochran served as first pas
tor. For several years, meetings
were held in the Grand theatre
and later in the Rodger building
on Ferry street Lots were se
cured on Miller and South Lib
erty streets and for a year, dur
ing the construction of the new
church, services were conducted
in tabernacle on the -east part of
the lot where - the church now
stands.
The building was erected dur
ing the pastorate of Rev. 'A. Q.
Weniger, wbo served the church
until a year ago, at which time he
resigned to take the pastorate of
large San Francisco church.
Rev. Edward L. Allen is the pres
ent pastor, having been called to
the pastorate -a year ago. .The
meeting was presided over by
Rev. F. M. Stannard. K. H. Pick
ens and Lloyd ' Gregg, who have
been closely associated with the
financial -handling of Calvary's af
fairs ainee its organization, con-

Green Guards May
Join Fire Crews
If 16 or Older
Older boys of the Oregon Green
Guard now have an opportunity
to join the- 600 high school youths
already assigned to state and pri
vate lands for fire suppression
activity, it was -announced Friday
following a cooperative 'agree
ment between the state forestry
department and the Keep Oregon
Green association.
According to the agreement,
boys of the Green Guard who are
18 years of age or older-would be
placed at once "with regular or
ganized crews located at strategic
spots within the ll,00e,00 forest
ed acres coming under state and
private patroL
Upon arriving at assigned forest
camps the youths would be given
early training in fire patrol, de
tection, fire suppression and
woods safety. Regular duties oth
er than fire fighting would in
clude telephone -and road main
tenance, trail construction and
forest improvement work.
Action taken in offering work
to the youth was based on the
need for reinforcing existing fire
suppression units, John B. Woods;
jr., state forestry employment of
ficer, reported. Critical fire wea
ther occurs during the months of
August and September, thus re
quiring additional patrol rein
forcements. Young men other
than -.guards may also apply for
the woods work by contacting
state forestry department, Salem.
