Mid-Willamette Valley News Reports From The Statesman's 78 Community Correspondents Flax Pulling; No Festival Fall Fiesta Abandoned; Harvest Task Poor Substitute . " ... Mt; ANGEL Business meft of Mt Angel have been supplement ing the corps of young people in saving the community's crops but the combined efforts of the two groups is not considered enough to handle the flax crop, one of the heaviest, so added workers have been requested from the US em4 ployment service. j The annual flax festival was abandoned this year , because of the war, but harvest conditions being what they probably will be, local growers hope many people will visit the community, to help if not to play at the harvest time. The heavy rains beat most of the flax to the ground, making it impossible to use machines for pulling. Pulling by hand will. re quire a large number of men. At the request of Mrs. E. B. Cotman of the Mt Angel bakery, the. lo cal employment, exchange head quarters, the. Portland employ ment office gave . assurance that men for flax pulling, would . be available.
