Steinbeck's Tortilla Flat'
Stars Tracy, Lamarr, Garfield
John Steinbeck's best-selling novel, "Tortilla Flat," emerges
from the printed page into visual being on the screen at the
Elsinore theatre, where the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer picture opens
today.
With Spencer Tracy, Hedy
starred, this charming narrative
of the California paisa 'os is a re
vealing romance, with orama and
comedy cunningly interlaced In
the action. Victor Fleming was
the director.
The supporting cast Includes
Frank Morgan, Akim Tamlroff,
Sheldon Leonard, John Qualen,
Donald Meek, Connie Gilchrist,
Allen Jenkins and He y O'Neill.
Each of them portrays with fi
delity one of Steinbeck's re
membered characters of "the
flats."
The love between Hedy Lamarr,
as the fiery, impetuous Dolores,
and Garfield, as Danny, lazy, like
able and dangerous,, gives these
stars completely new opportuni
ties. Spencer Tracy, as the philo
sophical Pilon of the story, de
parts from any previous role and
attains new heights in his under
standmg delineation of an arrest
ing character.
The picture reveals the life of
Tortilla Flats as Steinbeck knew
and described it. The somnolent
village with its humble shacks,
its flower gardens oddly con
trasting with its nondescript
junk heaps, is on the screen in
every detail, alive and vibrant
with the loves and the hates of
the paisanos.
The audience at the initial show
ing was swept Into spontaneous
applause by the artistry of the
cast, the effective qualities of the
scenes and the dramatic action of
the story. Steinbeck was acclaimed
for the novel. Now that praise will
be echoed across the country for
the picture.

'All Through the Night'
Is New Capitol Film Fare
"All Through the Night,"
Capitol theatre, is the story of
the gestapo, using just about the same tactics he used against
rival mobs in prohibition days. With Humphrey Bogart as the
gangster, a supporting cast includ
ing Kaaren Verne, Conrad Veidt,
Judith Anderson, Peter Loire,
Jane Darwell and Frank McHugh.
The tightly knit story covers a
span of less than 24 hours in the
lives (and in some cases, the
deaths) of its characters. The
opening scene cleverly sets the
mood, showing the ex-gangster
Bogart at lunch with some of his
henchmen. The boys are playing
with some toy soldiers, mapping
out the kind of military strategy
they think the British should use.
Bogart laughs at them and tells
them the war is none of their
business.
Bogart is called away by an
SOS from his mother. Mr. Miller,
the baker who lives next door, has
disappeared. Bogart discovers
Miller's murdered body in the
cellar, and also gets a glimpse of
a lovely young stranger, played
by Kaarei: Verne, who seems to
have some connection with the
murder.
Trailing her leads him to an old
warehouse and a nest of enemy
agents. He manages to get the girl
away from them, and from her
he learns about the nefarious work
of the gestapo right in New York.
